atina,Welcome.

Don't pay too much heed to rumors. What road you on? Above or below Captains? It's been pretty wet the last 10 days or so. Lots of privacy in most parts. Not many coquis. It's a bit off the main path. Some roads are rough. Dogs are best for keeping pigs and rats away. This is the jungle. Ya?

Agreed, the reality is much overstated. As well, over the last year, the bulk of the fringe elements that made Fern Forest's reputation what it once was have by and large up and moved--closer to town. I expect FF has one of the lowest crime rates in the area now.

It is one of the very few pieces of rural Hawaii left and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Not concerned about the Rumors.
We will make the most of everything and hopfully make some good friends in the process.
This is just another adventure in the course of our lives. We have raised our kids.
Now is the time to do somthing to keep us young or make us old(LOL). either way we are ready.

We will be on island Jan. 21, 2009 for another week (can't stay away), to finalize things, trow up a chair and kick rocks. Maybe we will meet some of you all then.

Aloha,
Mark and Anita

we would love to. but we will only be on island for one week this time. Maybe sometime between Jan 21-Jan 27, 2009, if not we would have to ask for a rain check for June.

Neighborhoods are what we make them, and I am positive you are going to love being in Fern Forest. Aloha from California and I hope to see you over there in a couple years (if I can hold out that long).

Good for you Anita and Mark! Aloha! I know first hand how exciting it is to have your offer on a Hawaiian home accepted. We are moving right now, arrive in Hilo on Monday afternoon (from East Bay). It took us almost a year (started our journey last February) and this group has been a lifeline to us. There are so many helpful people in this group. Ask any questions and I am sure you will get many answers. Almost everyone in Puna Web has made the move or plans to and they all have experience.

Our real estate agent took us to get all of the utilities turned on after our closing. He also has met several contractors at the house in our absense. He is the most service oriented agent we have ever had. He even stops by the house every few days and checks on it for us and he collects mail. When we got a water bill, he even went and PAID it for us. I think you will find the aloha spirit quite remarkable. We have great neighbors too, who watch the house for us.

We heard that getting cable and internet took a long wait, so we tried to get it set up after the closing in November, but they would not book any appointments more than 30 days in advance. They were fantastic about scheuling it later though and they are installing the day after we arrive.

Now that the truck is loaded and most of the work is done, it sure feels good. Just some tidying up and donations to take care of and we are heading West on Monday morning!
