Skylights a good idea in Puna?
#11
We have noticed the same heat issue with the corrugated translucent panels we put in in December. They let in about the same heat as the standard corrugated metal (our metal panels are not the newer radiant reflective sheets that HPM now sells, but the translucent panels are new from HPM - do not know if there is any radiant barrier in them....) but the panels let in much more heat than the metal roof with the Reflectix barrier under the metal...

We installed the one translucent panel over the walk in shower, so the shower floor does heat up a little (which our guests have said is kinda nice) the other panel is over the future kitchen sink area.... hopefully will not be too hot... luckily it can be switched out fairly easily if it turns out to be un-bearable!

Also try "sun tubes" - Terryl King at cadowin@hotmail.com supplied them.

The tube goes down 2 stories and still brings in lots of light. Enough light that all day I try to turn the "light" off in the bathroom! It also reflects a lot of moon light at night.

There is a sheet product made of multiwall ploycarbonate (cellular polycarbonate) that has a feature of reflecting the nearly perpendicular overhead (hottest) rays of the sun and admitting the low angle (morning and evening) ones. You would need to import it from the mainland but it is the only solution to the heat gain that I have seen.

We are planning to put up twinwall polycarb panels for the ceiling side of our skylights. We lucked out, in that the Greenhouse Specialists in Keaau had a large sheet that had been custom ordered, but never picked up. The price was reasonable for that one sheet, but to order it??? owwweee $$$!

Does anyone know if there is a supplier on Island, or even in the state, that carries it in stock?
