Now the catch-22. I can't say what happened in executive session until it's memorialized at the next BOD meeting. For the critics and those who are rightfully curious......You have absolutely no idea how bad the situation was that was left to the BOD and remaining administrative staff at the end of March. We had everything from a purposely destroyed computer and accounting system to a conspiracy adverse to our HPPOA with the bond holder.
The outside world saw nothing and your BOD and staff had basically another full time job to repair it. Some of us didn't need another full time job!!! In spite of this challenge it got done and it's better than it was. This whole matter even had the blessing of council, in that we needed to get a handle on the situation to maintain our credibility and financial standing.
There are no scapegoats here and I will not create one. The matter of accountability lies directly with the BOD on the state of the operation (including the GM position) and need to act upon the situation swiftly, decisively and within reason. That was done.
Many are right to question, as it is a collective body that is impacted. To criticize or comment without full knowledge of the facts is inappropriate. It is easy to criticize a job (especially a volunteer one) while sitting on the sidelines, but I would have challenged an individuals sanity if they would have not considered the proposal we were given as a solution in the best interest of the HPPOA. The only exception to this would be a BOD member knowing all the facts.
That being said, I would very humbly ask that consideration be given to prudent behavior allowing for full disclosure of the facts (yes that will be done) in accordance with established protocol. If after hearing the full story, if one needs to voice an opinion, then by all means do it.
Give it a chance before you pass judgment.
Aloha,
Jeff.

It is not about making stink for a person. Kaniu Kinimaka-Stocksdale has a very public record of ripping off Hawaii taxpayers. And in 2000 and 2001, as a public school teacher begging for help with our special needs students, when I saw her on the nightly news admitting she had gotten more than half a million dollars in DOE contracts ($638,000 I think the figure was) through a "personal relationship" with the Superintendent of Education, I was furious!
Check these links:http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D06E5DBI631F930A15753C1A9679C8B63&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print

And I had a very lengthy conversation with Kaniu when she ran for County Council and she tried to say that she wanted to move on from that. The upshot of what I got from our lengthy talk was that she didn't have the simplest understanding that a political figure's public record is his or her most important attribute.
Here's what she said on Hunter Bishop's blog when he was doing a synopsis of Puna candidates back in 2006: "Kaniu Stocksdale spent much of her time reminding people that she has a colorful past that they should forget about. Stocksdale filed a complaint against (opponent Gary) Safarik for campaigning using county resources which recently was upheld by the county ethics board. Safarik promptly retaliated by raising the issue of Stocksdale's affair with the state Superintendent of Schools several years ago and her receipt of DOE contracts to help special education students for which she was unqualified. Stocksdale said later she's through talking about the past now, but just wanted to show her opponents, primarily Safarik, that she isn't afraid of them or of addressing the issue. "Don't let my colorful past blind you," she said. "I have a passion and commitment to serve." (No longer available at http://hunterbishop.com/journal/2006/9/1...forum-.htm)
Now, Kaniu is a sweet, pretty, sometimes even a kind lady. But the residents of HPP do have the right to know her public record. And, for the record, she was cited on March 3, 2008 and again on April 29, 2008 for failure to file her required campaign spending reports with the state. Everything I've said here is a matter of public record. Good luck to all my friends and family in HPP...

As an off island owner of two lots, I will say that there have been some valid concerns expressed here. I would hope the new GM is hired as an interim and not as of yet given a long contract, pending a later review of performance. I am certainly leery of anyone with questionable ethics. I would hate to see too soon a repeat of past problems, or worse.

Oh, come on now. You all get a highly qualified person to except a extremely difficult position and some have to throw darts, sling mud, and use character assassination before that person even shows up for the job. Kaniu Stocksdale has never tried to cover-up anything she has ever done in the past and should be admired for it. In stead some would prefer to drag her down. Knowing her as I do this will only add to her strong character and make HPPOA a better place to live.
Yes, Kaniu Stocksdale has run for council and I personal feel that she was the best choice. Because of the mud throwing campaign that went on she didn’t make it, instead the popular aloha queen did. I might add that Kaniu was not the one throwing dirt in that campaign it was the ones that like dirty politic. Kind of like the person that posted here who likes to dig up dead issues dust them off and then take the high moral ground and hide.
Good luck to you Kaniu, just shake you head and be the good person that you are.

Lack, I have no first hand knowledge of the new GM and I will make no judgements of her. I hope you are correct.

Basically, Jeff, you're asking the HPP community to trust the decision you announced in this forum that effective immediately, Kaniu Stockdale resigned her appointed position on the HPPOA Board and was appointed HPPOA General Manager.
You allude to conspiracy theories... nonsence, we need answers to questions.
1. How is it that the person charged with heading the recruitment committee for a General Manager(GM), Kaniu Stockdale, came to be the GM?
2. I was told there were '7' strong applicants. Were any of the strong applicants interviewed?
3. Did the BOD make a decision to pursue independent contractors and NOT recruit from the community?
4. Was this decision made in pubic session?
5. Did the Board ask any of the '7' strong applicants if they had an interest in the position as an independent contractor?
6. How many members of the BOD voting for "this" will still be on the BOD to live with the consequences of this BOD's actions.
If I were one of the candidates, I would feel blindsided.
If I had urged any one of the '7' strong candidates to apply, I would be embarrassed 1st, furious 2nd.
I heard that another person had been hired in the Office, that she had worked in your Realty office. If the HPPOA office needs assistance, why not contract for that identified assistance for a specific time? The need for an additional employee was not on the agenda. Recommendations from the finance group working with the treasurer should form the basis for additional office assistance.
Back to my first question: How is it that the person charged with heading the recruitment committee came to to be the GM?
Barbara
PS... These are questions of PROCESS and ACCOUNTABILITY not personality.

Lack, I don't hide anywhere...I wish I could. I just don't like getting in these back and forth battles on here people like you seem to love. I have better things to do with my time.
Please explain how she is highly qualified. And what wealth of experience? It'll be interesting to see what is listed.
I actually feel for the people in HPP...you all are facing what all our subdivisions are... a true lack of leaders willing to serve the public good. And that goes from the community associations up to the top levels of government in this state.
Warmest regard, Frankie

Frankie,
You have no warm reguards for me or anyone else other than Obama. So don't sugar coat it, find something that is worthy. Cow pie chucking don't cut it.
The Lack, and try and some aloha it will do your soul good.

Well, Lack, attacking me is just a tactic of someone trying to divert the real questions I raised:
How is she highly qualified and what is her wealth of experience?
You know nothing about me and from what I've read over time, you don't know much of anything else. And you're the last one to be speaking of aloha.

Frankie, I think your question is valid and I'm sure we will hear why she was chosen as the best of all the candidates. Perhaps it will be explained in the minutes?
Speaking of which, at the risk of repeating myself I started a new thread enqiring about the last few meetings and their minutes. Let's not lose sight of the money matters: road paving, the bond, and where we are at with both. I wish the new GM success and I look forward to the new transparency of our board and to hearing more of what is going on with these costly issues.
