can sheep and pineapple coexist?
#11
Carol, we had about 200+ sheep on our farm on the Oregon coast in a former life so cant comment about pineapples. Dogs and sheep generally do not mix. An unsupervised herding dog will herd the sheep til they are exhausted and some times will become aggressive, tearing the ears and ripping hunks of skin off the flanks. Most dogs will chase sheep for sport and when they get a taste of blood think umm, umm good, then its a choice of sheep or dog. In our case it was the dog as the sheep were income.
The only time I ever had sheep and dog co-exist was when I got a Kommodor guard dog pup and raised it with bummer lambs and it bonded with the lambs/sheep and protected the flock from predators, two and four legged. So,having said all that my daughter had a dog ( mixed breed)that had no interest in the sheep. Not much is cast in stone. If you get sheep do not leave the dog unsupervised and see what happens, you may luck out or have to make a choice Ron

I've had two sheep (lawnmowers) for a few months, penelope and sebastian, one rottweiler, maile, that i've had for 6 years and a 10x12 batch of white pineapple. My sheep have tried to nibble on everything, including the pineapple leaves and sort-of shook their heads and haven't touched them since. I built a barn for the sheep and put all 3 animals in at once for a few hours at a time to interact with each other, for a few days at a time and acted as referee. Unless you have aggressive dogs (or sheep) they bore of each other after a few days and that relationship lasts forever (raised on a farm). What you can do, to make absolutely certain your dogs won't go after your sheep if they're injured is to have someone show up in the barn after a few days of the animals bonding; and act as if they are attacking the sheep. This technique works with all animals, including birds and rabbits. The dog will certainly, again if they're not naturally aggressive, they will FEEL empathy and probably will want to protect them. Sure fire way to train any farm animals to interact unobtrusively and a great way to spend time getting to know your animals yourself! If you want ANY animals and you have dogs, don't give them bloody meat ever.

Damn, seems like the ancient scriptures were right on this one. Dog+pineapples+sheep=evil until jebus returns!

Watch for the indigo spandex and the stigmata with the telltale golden "j" flying through the heavens. That's the All Clear to plant pineapple. Cape color I'm not privy to, so don't ask.

Faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locative, able to forgive the sins of mankind with one gruesome writhe. . . .

You know, either this post has to do with the idiot simpson show or it is an atheist trying to be as mean as possible. Wow, Jebus, indigo spandex, stigmata, telltale; you're a genius. I don't think it's funny at all.

I've been trying to contribute to this "Punaweb", but the 8 or 9 people (including the host) who HANGOUT here and smite my posts suck!

BewitchedinHilo,
Please just ignore Jay, that is what most of us do when he goes off on his unintelligible rants. If you look at this thread he has tried to derail any sensible contributions from the first, for some reason only known to him. I don't understand why, since he has his own forum supporting self sufficiency and local small scale agriculture, but for some reason he has decided mine are frivolous posts deserving frivolous answers. I guess he assumes I am just another useless yuppie from the mainland, playing at gentlewoman farmer who will probably either starve, or run amuck and steal food from my neighbors, when his predicted economic apocalypse hits and the barges quit running. He has a very dark view of the world and it shows in some of his posts.

I appreciated your response, it was one of the few that was actually helpful on this subject, please stick around.

hey Carol the sheep prob. wont eat the pineapple plants themselves but sure the would eat the fruit if given half a chance, its the sugar they like...people have been feeding them papaya to sweeten the meat..but just like with a three-way grain that has molasses in it, its the sugar thing....so just harvest your fruit dont let it sit out their..allthough you might expeirement since the longer you let the fruit sit the more acid build up, maybe you could see if they would eat it with high acid levels...I'm going up to pam's on thursday I try it for ya....[Big Grin]

Carol, apologies--nothing here but humor, no personal attacks, no sinister attempt to belittle anyone's projects or any of that. No attempt to derail an obviously deadly serious topic about sheep and pineapples. Many people find "Simpsons" humor funny. I'll in the interest of being constructive attempt to keep any humor that may offend, which, I guess, is all of it--off the forum.

Jay,
I actually really like the Simpsons, I'm even a big South Park fan, but when people start chiming in with humor right off the bat it usually pretty much derails a thread and kills the chances of getting a real answer. Yours was the first response I got, and since you were doing the humor schtick everyone else followed right along. I had to plead for a return to my question in order to get any valid answers. You only posted twice to this thread, and both were purely attempts at humor, so I assumed that as an obviously intelligent person who can connect cause and effect, you were intending the subsequent derailment.
