Introducing myself
#11
The thread I referred to above has a lot of info...

With things like photos & files, it is best to make sure they stay DRY. The humidity & bugs here can wreck havoc on paperwork. If you can get them into sealing storage boxes, put some desiccant (those little packets that come in 'bout everything, or make your own with crystal style kitty litter) & seal them up. Books can get warped easily, so we keep them in sealed clear boxes (had a sealed bookcase, but the boxes on selves seem to work better for us.... & would have been easier to ship in the 1st place!)

Furniture? Does it fit into you future planned lifestyle & will it hold up to the weather here. We made choices not to move ours based on the fact that most of the 'good' stuff were overstuffed pieces & family antiques. We wanted a more casual lifestyle here... Also we did not have a place picked out that we were moving to.

Storing things here is storing in a higher humidity. Things get funky. Whether you keep things on the mainland is a personnel option, but we know many who have, and most have found it more of a bother in the end.

The Jeep will come in handy here, esp for some of the subdivisions.... Many private subdivisions here have gravel roads, most are a little rough and some roads here are 4WD recommended.

Welcome Mamma Garcia!

I think everyone answered your questions already, but I just wanted to welcome you.

There are a lot of places that could use caretakers here, but they are usually hired through friends and referrals. You might contact some real estate agents and send them your references and skills. Some might not want kids living on the property due to liability. You could also contact some property management companies. Try putting a free "non"classified ad up here and at PunaOnline as well as an ad in the newspaper. Once you get here, make friends and ask around, eventually you may find a position like that. You also might try Craig's List.

Best of luck to you!

Aloha au i Hawai`i,
devany

The Lack- My family has been in Vallejo for five generations. I've seen Gentleman Jim's. With a two-year-old and a 2 month old, you can imagine I don't go out much though. I'll definitely check punaonline for more info on the moving process. There really is a lot of great information on this forum. Glad I found it.

Carey- Thanks so much for your post. I remember when I lived there some years back all my books got warped and mildewed. I have a lot of those airtight containers in my basement. Those will come with us for sure. I'm keeping a mental list of all my furniture and things to sell...rugs, washer/dryer, fridge. Thinkin I'll start putting craigslist ads out in December or so. I'm going to sell some clothes, shoes and winter coats at some buy/sell/trade stores. It will feel good to lighten our load. It's funny how we spend so many years accumulating stuff and end up feeling so weighed down by it. Aloha.

Thanks Devany. I will also ask my friends that live in Puna to keep an ear out for a caretaker situation. We'll post online too.

welcome to you and your family. lots of good advice already given. do keep some layering types of clothing and/or a lightweigt jacket. we're at app. 2400 ft. elevation and to us 50 degrees is cold. guess it all depends on where you will be living.

Ok...almost a year later and...we are moving! My husband is transferring his job to Hilo, starting May 11. We're flying out May 2nd. Exciting and scary in kind of an invigorating way. We are shipping one vehicle and selling all of our furniture. I still have a long list of things I have to do in the next few weeks. We're about to secure our rental in HPP. We have a friend checking it out tomorrow. I'll be on here going over the details. Wish us luck. Aloha.
