Shipping e Moving services
#11
Hi Les, Yes I think that storing here on the mainland and then shipping when needed is probably the best thing to do as cost would be less as availablity of storage units here are very competative! Will definately look into this and delayed shipping.

Aloha waynesb, that container yard by the Bart wouldn't be on High Street headed to the High Street bridge going into Alameda would it? LOL

You might want to make sure that you have a plan for a container after you are done with it. Some subdivisions do not allow them to be left on your lot. If you want to resell it later, I don't know if there is a secondary market for them here or not.

Mella,
High St. sounds about right, but I don't really know. It's just I have seen it from BART on rare trips into SF.

My thought was Hawaiian Acres or Fern Forest, not Seaview or Nanawale. That would certainly be disconcerting to neighbors, if not POAs!

Lokahi...we paid West Point Relocation 1,600 just on 9/1/06...today I read this and we are trying to get with another mover ASAP!! This is from the Konaweb Forum:

Moving to Hawaii Scam

Posted by on Monday, 11 September 2006, at 11:56 a.m.

The movers were scheduled to pick up our goods between a 3 day window. They did not show up until 6 days later. We had to reschedule our flights change hotel reservations, all of which we were never reimbursed for. When the movers finally showed up there was only ONE! My neighbors had to help the mover load the truck. Of course this whole time we could never get anyone on the phone. When the goods reached Hawaii they sat on the wrong loading dock for at least a week before they were delivered. Once they were finally delivered we were missing 3 large boxes of professional cooking supplies ( my husband is a sous chef), a DVD Recorder/VCR Combo Player, a box of personal files and older model laptop computer and they opened all of my husbands XBOX games and removed the discs (14 Games). Out of all of our belongings they took the most valuable pieces. This shows that they took their big greasy mitts and pawed through all of our possessions. We feel very violated and of course they do not return our phone calls. And they never sent any paper work for us to sign. I know that there are not many moving companies to Hawaii but I do think you get what you pay for. If you do use these movers just know that they will open all of your boxes and go through your belongings and take what they like. Beware! If you have any questions or need some moving advice please contact me.

Tony will be calling his credit card company to see if we can get our money back. I have sent an email to "Chris" at West Point Relocation but he is not real good about getting back to you I am finding out. Good Luck.

P.S. Here is a website you may want to check out --- many, many reports regarding this moving company:

OMG!! I hope that you are successful in getting your credit card company to get your money back. Go Tony go! I don't know where to start. Yes I do. Manners please. I am so sorry for you and Tony. I am so thankful to you and Tony for this post and information. You guys will be WPR's best advertising! I just read with horror the many "ripoffs" on the ripoffreport.com site and can say my choice in movers has been seriously influenced and know that a change will be a high priority for us. Please keep us all informed about your success with the credit card company and of course the unfolding tale about WPR's unfortunate business practice choices. What a great forum and resource this is! Another reason to know in our hearts why we have chosen Puna to be our home...people like you willing to be great neighbors and special people. MAHALO NUI. Aloha to you and Tony.

The plot thickens! The woman who is complaining about WPR has had an affair apparently with Chris, the representative. Their struggle became more than personal. Chris has been suspended from his position pending the litigation in this matter. We could not get our money back. I talked to the General Manager of the company for more than an hour and he answered every one of my many, many questions and comments. He asked me to give his company a chance and states that he will personally track and keep an eye on our container as it makes it's way home. Frankly, we are stuck here. I realize that $1,600 is not a huge amount to some, but it does matter here with all the other expenses we are incurring (and two mortgage payments until our home in Tempe is sold). However, I have made the decision to drive our little Toyota pickup to Long Beach Harbor myself early next week and fly back to Arizona before the movers arrive. That alone will save us $600. We really don't wanna trust some unknown person to drive our vehicle from Phoenix to Long Beach. If something happens in transit I want it to be our fault LOL!!

The saga continues...

(P.S. - I have the email addresses to the Arizona State Attorney General, Hawaii State Attorney General, Department of Transportation, American Moving & Storage Association, the House of Representatives and the United States Senate!!! Any Takers?!)

Carrie - Are you getting the affair info from the company only? I'd dig a little deeper. Can you e-mail the person that made the post on Kweb and see if you feel like her story is truthful? I would be afraid to use them after the post.

About buying a container: David M in Ninole bought a container and shipped his stuff ov er in it. This was last summer and the price worked out about the same as renting and shipping. He is using the container for a storage shed. I'm sure he has posted about it before but will likely chime in on this thread too. David.. where are you....

Thanks for the container suggestion, but we're not really in the position to buy a container right now.

As far as the post goes - no, I can't email her since I was kicked off the Konaweb for defending a friend. I understand I am in good company.

We can't afford to give up $1,600 for the deposit. I am a little less hesitant since I spoke to the General Manager and grilled him for about an hour over this. I told him that I am ready to report his company to many authorities in both states.

He assured me that he will keep in close personal contact with us and I feel like I don't have a choice at this point since our move is only 9 days away! We have spent money on our airfare and pet preparations, on the movers already and we still have our house here on the market and are incurring costs because of that as well.

I would love to have more time to make a new decision and start but nothing we can do at this point. However, we don't want to trust our truck to them, so I will be driving that by myself to Long Beach and will fly back here to Tempe before the movers even come. It will be an adventursome week for me for sure.

Also, any personal papers are going to be shipped separately before we leave so we will get them shortly after we arrive. We are also shipping a few boxes with things like personal items, some clothing, some kitchen stuff...just to get us through for the month before our stuff arrives. It will make us feel better to have that stuff on it's way via UPS or USPS. The only thing that concerns us is the computer and I have made that CLEAR to him that we are aware of these activities of pillaging with other customers. He states that the allegations are false and there is a legal action pending and they actually have suspended the representative Chris for this affair he got tangled up in.

Am I anxious? YES! And it seems like the wheels are in motion anyway.

Aloha Nopregyet Punagirl - so when are your new visit dates?

Yes, we purchased and shipped via Horizon, a 20 ft container. It is now part of my tractor/utility shed and painted Balconey Rose, the color Sophie has picked for the house. I'd be happy to answer any questions on the subject.

Carrie - I'd suggest, being as you're "stuck" to make all your payments via a credit (not debit) card to get any extra protection. As for shipping your Toyota - are you REALLY saving that amount when you consider all the costs and time involved?

As a matter of fact David, when Tony got home we sat down and figured it would really only save us about $300, and I don't need the added stress...we'll just have to stop being control freaks and let them drive it to Long Beach from Tempe. Final. LOL!

But we will be taking photos of his tool chest and all the tools, the computer (and get the serial numbers), and will be shipping some personal papers regarding the house, etc. ahead of us so they will get there just after we do.

Ready or not, here we come...
