The new air-tight stoves require bone-dry wood, so better have a well enclosed area to store your wood. Keep it covered and dry for at least a year for happy results.

I had a very bad experience with the fireplace store with regard to service. They have virtually no competition however. Believe me. I checked.

I would follow with Glen's anti-recommendation. My roof stack was a completely different size than my interior stack(it's ok, that's how we do it here in Hawaii)--still is, as I can't return it and have welded it together-- didn't want to even supply the asbestos wad to fix that, supplied the wrong 200 dollar flange for my roof pitch(the dremel tool and welder fixed that after about 4 hours)--(excuse, a 6-12 roof, no one does that here in Hawaii) and gave me crap for having mud on my boots while swiping a card for 3000 bucks--(No one has mud on their boots in Hawaii.) This had nothing to do with saving a nickle as I was cold and would have paid whatever it took to warm up. At the end of the day however, and during the process it was clear I was to me I was being wholly screwed by by a local monopoly. So it is. I like my stove, in spite of the bastard install that I was compelled to do. Are there better options? Sure. My dad next door has the same set up and with freight from the mainland hasn't busted half the cost.

The Fireplace is the place for a wide selection, but I seem to remember a couple of weeks ago, there was someone picking up a franklin stove type thing at the Keaau Ace... it seemed that they had them on occasion, but they were not always in stock... may want to try the local hardware stores....

We have vented gas (propane) stoves and fireplace. We bought the stoves from a mainland company and shipped them in our container. Advice from our local draftsman was to purchase the main (expensive) fireplace from the Hilo store as that would also get us installation and service. We knew what we wanted, it was part of our stamped plans, but was a painful, 2 hour ordeal to special order even though it's one of their normal brands (Heat N Glo). When it came in, we had to pick it up from the freight company. Installation? nope, not available. Check with plumbers or The Gas company for recommendations. I became the installer, my plumber did the gas connections. At one point, it appeared I was missing a significant trim piece. I returned to the store for remedy, not a pleasant experience, but for a few hundred dollars I could order a replacement and wait another 8-10 weeks. Luckily, I found the missing piece. I was also informed they didn't really provide any "service" beyond ordering of parts.
Were I to do it again, I'd do my research and make significant effort on the shipping. I've had good service at reasonable costs from DHX for bulky/heavy items. I've also recently learned some mainland companies get very favorable rates with FedEx ground for such items. Here's link: http://www.hearthsidedistributors.com/ to company I got my propane stoves from, but they carry wood products as well. I've actually gotten better support (email/phone/parts) from them than the Hilo store. David Ninole Resident

Wow, well a nice lady helped me both times I was in the store over a period of 6 years. Sorry to hear about how others were treated, and good to share the stories for the future.

It's not the store so much. It's the installation. I was seriously considering flying someone over from the mainland. Would have been cheaper...and safer.

Good source has been the True Value Hardware in Volcano. As they are still remodeling (and I wonder if they will ever finish) you have to ask but they have them, and pipes, etc.... Prices are very reasonable. Good Luck!
