Aloha Adrienne.
There is so much that is good about Puna. Some people don't like the rain...we do. I love drifting off to sleep to the sound of the evening rain on the roof, and waking up to the cardinals singing outside my window. What a joy to be able to sit on a cliff and spot whales spouting in the distance. The sight of a whale breaching is breathtaking. We are close to the volcano entry where we can watch the earth being born. We have the most fabulous farmers' market anywhere! Pahoa is a tiny old town with great character. I like going to the bank and the ladies know me. I don't need to be dolled-up to leave the house...it is so relaxed and come-as-you-are. We don't care what you wear. My feet don't like shoes anymore. We have a few really good restaurants in Pahoa - not just "good for being in Puna." We moved from a sprawling Phoenix area and wanted some peace of mind and a slower pace. We found it here and I know if we left and went to the mainland to live again, I would miss this place dearly. We have more friends here than ever on the mainland. People love to talk story. There are so many people willing to help if needed, whether it is a ride or to recommend someone reliable for a job you need done. My Mother came with us and is so happy here. There are so many senior services available - more than there ever were in Arizona. She says she could never move away. the list goes on... Well this is easy for me in one sense and that is when I land at the Hilo airport I want to kiss the ground! It feels like home from some remote part of my psyche, the breeze smells like home from some long lost remembrance of my soul as it brushes past my cheek, and when I look into the puffy simmering clouds ambling by I KNOW THIS IS where I belong, where I came from. When I'm not there I miss it too much for dry eyed words.
