Papaya Vandalism in Kapoho
#11
KHNL just reported that the crop was GMO.
I doubt that 8500 chopped papaya was vandalism.

I thought all papayas in Hawaii were GMO. That is, all the ones not covered in ringworm.

Paul, The disease is ring SPOT, a virus, not a parasitic ringworm (i'm gonna guess that ringworm abhor papaya, since it is a home remedy to rid one of ringworm....).
Not all papaya in Hawaii are GMO, but the GMO papaya can cross pollinate with nearby fields, so there is a chance that more field can turn into GMO F1- F2 populations.

Not sure where mdd got the info on GMO (ETA: Genetically Modified Organism - usually used to denote lab created crosses in the DNA - ones that would never happen in natural cross pollinating), but none of the news reports, including KHNL, have place the crop type on the internet...so without a link from mdd, I suspect it is too early to label this a 'GMO issue' oh, and destroying trees that are not on your property, without permission IS vandalism. Where do people come off with the idea that it ISN'T????
ETA: all reports & the photos look like single slice - machete....come on folks READ the articles ...)

they used chainsaws from what ive heard from papaya growers at my work. I highly doubt it had anything to do with gmo. Its sounding more and more through the grapevine that it was someone who was "wronged" or a personal beef. Sorry folks, no conspiracy on gmo. (genetically modified organism)

ETA: CHAINSAW???? REALLY???? We have had to cut a few of elder or mis-placed papayas... None of the ones we have used a chainsaw with have the nice clean cuts pictured in all of the media accounts of this... looks to me like sharp knife/machete dispatch, and that is what all of the media is reporting that farmer of the trees is saying happened.... so either the workers are not as close to this, or the chainsaw was remarkably sharp to even deceive the farmer!
Whateva!....

wow, settle down Carey. Got a little worked up did ya?

I do agree by the pictures it "looks like a sharp knife" cut. A chainsaw would indeed make a very clean cut if the blade was good though. And the only reason they think chainsaws were used is because its 8500+ trees over 17 acres and the amount of physical labor would have been enormous. 5 guys in 2 hours? Maybe 10-15 guys with machetes in a couple of hours. No one really knows. Plus, the picture was in the paper just today. We heard about this Wednesday, long before the media got their hands on it.

Either way, its a huge loss. And again, it was just word through the grapevine info like i stated above. Also, what all the media is saying? REALLY??? If you believe all the media says well......Whateva!.... LOL

Chainsaws would be quick, but VERY NOISY!

I can't imagine the vandals would take a chance like that.

Chainsaws can be heard for a mile or more away on a quite Puna night.
