interisland flights Cheap?
#11
HA has a very strong union. Their flight attendants have some of the best benefits in the industry. (But don't believe me, ask their flight attendants next time you fly with them).

It's absolutely true that the employees who were shifted to other areas of the company no longer sit in a cushy air-conditioned office. Without a doubt they have a much tougher job now. But most are happy to be employed in a growing company. (I've met and talked with most of them.)

You might be right that future generations will not have these jobs available to them, and that's truly a bummer. But since we're speculating here (and in light of razor thin--if any--margins in the airline industry), if these jobs hadn't been moved overseas, then it's not hard to imagine that HA would have suffered the same fate as Aloha Airlines. In such a scenario, that means the customer service and flight attendant jobs at Hawaiian Air would be gone forever too. And who would suffer? We the consumer; we the people of Hawaii.

But I'm not smart enough to predict the future so I'll stick with the present: HA is still hiring--hundreds of people since last year--with aggressive plans for expansion in Asia and even some new routes to the mainland. I see their growth and consequent job creation as a good thing.

Somewhat off topic, Punafish, but do any of you contacts at HA have any hints as to which mainland cities they might choose for expansion? Their lack of service east of Vegas and Phoenix keeps them off the radar for a huge segment of the U.S. vacation market.

Actually, I'm the one who's been off topic, and my apologies to ericlp for diverting the thread.

Don't know if any decision has been made, but HA has made it public that they're considering a route to the East Coast. (Gee, I wonder what city that might be...)

Personally, I'd like to see a route to the Midwest--like Chicago--but only for selfish reasons. :-)

Yeah, NYC is a huge market and only Contintental (soon to be United) has a single daily non-stop flight to HNL from their Newark hub. The Washington metro area has a 5 million plus population base with no non-stop Hawaii service. I somehow doubt HA will try to break into fortress hubs like ATL or DFW, though. ORD? Maybe, but United is pretty strong there. Lots of interesting possibilities.

With the united / continental merger - and the expansion of continental into Hilo. Makes me wonder out loud whether the continental / united regional jets are soon to follow. It would allow continental to use Hilo as a mini "hub"

And speaking of the new daily Continental flight from Hilo to LA that starts this weekend.....It's not cheap either. Couldn't find anything under $500.00 roundtrip with tax. And most of the fares hover around $750.00. Last summer you could fly Kona to the west coast for $398.00 roundtrip on Alaska.
