Whats up with the Mango Trees this year?

If you throw some orchids in your mango, you will always have something interesting to see! I threw an orchid (tucked it in the crotch of two branches) a couple of years ago. Not only did it not fall out, but it is blooming now. For all of the challenges of living here, I have to say that orchids growing in trees makes up for a lot of them. I didn't know at the time that you were supposed to put fishing wire or something around them to keep them in the tree...and to keep from having to look at the roots.

As for actual buds, my mango isn't there yet, although other mangoes in HPP have gone bonkers with buds this year. Maybe next year.

Ours in HPP had tons of buds...but the heavy rain put an end to that. No mangos this year

Our lychee trees are dropping some fruit, but it still looks like we may have a decent crop - way up in the top of the big trees. No mango trees yet to have flowers.

We are having the same problem with a huge tree that every one says bears awesome Hayden-like mangoes. Two years and almost no fruit. Lots of blooms but do not set.

So two weeks ago my hubby said well no fruit setting, and gave it a bolo head haircut leaving only the healthiest of branches, and cutting off all the suckers. Composted and added all the nutrients it may be missing. We'll see next year how it does.

I know nothing about trees. I usually plant under my friend Anthony's guidance (a master gardener) and hope for the best.

Thats exactly what i did two yrs ago to the hayden.... it really exploded with new growth and is very green and healthy...but i think haydens are extremely sensitive to the tons of rain we sometimes get.. I have another big mango that was not trimmed.. and still has what looks like small fruit starting to set up high... we'll see.

fast forward to 2013....

its May 1 and our tree is loaded with blooms. I think we may be fairly safe from too much rain or lots of wind... but my questions is:

Which variety of mango is blooming now?

Because this tree was always in the shadow of the Hayden, we arent sure what it is. I am hoping a hayden too but it could be the little tiny ones like in our old yard.

Cat - Plant It Hawaii has a mango link with fruiting times, so look for a late summer-fall bearer, but this year, everything seems to be flowering at odd intervals, our onolicious orange has had blooms & fruit set since last summer no high crop time, but constant bearing (mind you, I love this arrangement, but this is NOT a normal year)

The fact that flowering & fruit set is not normal this year was really evident at the BIAN sale...seems like that was a common discussion thread in most of the booths I visited....
