TMT Work to Resume Says Ige!
basically the gov is officially done with this crap. finally.

Ige said the roads belong to everyone and cannot be blocked, and construction of the TMT must proceed. Next week should be interesting. If the protestors insist on placing themselves in the roadway, I expect we'll see many more arrests than we have up until this point.

Let's hope cooler heads prevail, and the responsibility the protestors displayed in cleaning up the rocks they threw in the road is carried forward into the days ahead.

meanwhile, the cause to eradicate the evil telescopes which desecrate our sacred mountain tops appears to have spread like a feverish trance to Maui's Haleakala:

Convoy to Maui Telescope
Does Not Leave as Planned Amid Vigil

A vigil was held at the central Maui Baseyard last night in support of those who are protecting Mauna Kea from construction on the Big Island of Hawai'i, and ongoing issues surrounding development at the summit of Haleakala; on Maui.

A slow moving convoy that was scheduled to depart from the area to deliver equipment to the Daniel K Inouye Solar Telescope currently under construction at Haleakala, did not leave at 10 p.m. as planned. As of 2:30 a.m. demonstrators on site continued to hold their ground.

The group of demonstrators on Maui said the issue remains under deliberation at the state Supreme Court, and should not proceed without the blessing of the community. ...

ditto.

"basically the gov is officially done with this crap. finally."

have to admit, that sentiment is right in there too.

If these so called Protectors really cared about the aini ... There wouldn't be so much rubbish on the streets. Wouldn't one assume that we should clean up our island and actions would be put to better use than putting up a telescope?

If they can't respect the land, then how can they respect a mountain? Seems to me the real agenda is hidden here.

Call me cynical but even if the protesters don't recognize it themselves, I think what they really want is conflict. Getting arrested will in some way please them more than achieving their ambiguously stated goal.

ETA: Whatever that is.

Finally we get something with some backbone from the Gov. Yes, he threw in a sop to the "host culture," but that concept is starting to wear thin after all the crap. I still wish that Hawaiians who support the TMT would be more vocal because the legitimate goals of the Hawaiians have been dealt a setback by all this. The protesters need to shift their focus to demanding the OHA and DHHL reform themselves and deliver on their unkept promises.

Just a quick post to address some of Pahoated's usual misinformation.

"Optical telescopes require large focusing mirrors."

No they don't. Focusing is generally done by a combination of the secondary mirror and optics inside the instrument, all relatively small mirrors or detectors.

"The James Weber optical telescope is the next space based telescope [...]"

That'll be the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) which is an infrared telescope, not optical.

"There are trillions of objects to be observed and studied, an optical telescope can only focus on one thing at a time."

Yet our telescope managed to observe a million stars in one observation. The stars are at an effective focus of infinity. You do not need to focus a telescope on each star or galaxy.

"There is also a big transition going on. Just as astronomers replaced astrologers (for the most part), we are entering a time when astrophysicists and computer programmers are replacing astronomers."

This is just ridiculous and quite ignorant. These days astronomers = astrophysicists and vice versa. I'm an astronomer yet my higher degree is in astrophysics. Most astronomers have a physics background. As for computer programmers, do most have the skills to carry out individual astronomical research? I think not.

"If you see how UH Manoa is processing data from the Mauna Kea observatories, it is banks of computer programmers connected to a supercomputer."

I don't even know where to start with this one. Nearly all of the Mauna Kea observatories reduce data in-house or send the raw data elsewhere for reduction, certainly not UH. PT's claim is pure fantasy.

HOTPE,

"Once again gypsy, I ask you, exactly HOW does the TMT steal and sell our keiki short by providing funds for their education that would otherwise not be there? The TMT gives the keiki MORE money, it doesn't take it away. People who are against the TMT are the ones who will take TMT funds away from our keiki if it isn't built. You understand that right?"

I've given up with gypsy. He only asks questions, many of which have been answered, but never answers direct questions. I don't know why, maybe it makes his head hurt, laziness or something else, but logic does not exist in his world, so expecting it is pointless.

No, I doubt very much he understands your point.

I would include Gypsy69 among those for whom conflict is its own reward.
