For price comparison, if you go with this, U-Haul will sell you a cube that measures 4'W x8'L x7'H. And you provide the lock and keep the key. I used U-Haul because I could not get a container delivered and picked up in my location. I think the container (20') would be a better deal.

I was told my car would be put in a container for shipping on Matson. WRONG!! It went in a ship that hauled cars. If you want your car's clear coat to remain intact, give the car a good wax before shipping. My car suffered badly and quickly after arriving in Hawaii.

Jon, I looked at their website, was it reasonable using the Relocube?

i've forgotten the exact amount to ship a relocube from Austin to Hilo, but I think it was around 3000. Nuts. Did not do this. I got some quotes on shipping 2 or 3 pallets wrapped in shrinkwrap and this was like 4,000 I think. Container was close to 7000k I think. It was all just insane. I added everything up that I had in a three bedroom house and just couldnt justify the shipping costs. I finally just rented the UHaul and sent boxes parcel post and gave everything else to goodwill or neighbors. I"ve spent about a thousand dolllars total here to furnish the house, but I was able to buy some stuff from the former tenants in my house. Very lucky that my landlord allowed me to do this!

Looking at the quotes you got, can't believe how crazy the shipping costs are!
The research you did and the final decisions you made, was very "akamai"[Smile]
Enjoy reading your posts!

Thanks hikatz! I think the people on the westcoast have it a lot easier. Seems like they get much lower quotes.

I personally think a good cost look involves cost to ship vs cost to replace. In our case, I did a spreadsheet. Once the cost to replace equalled shipping, we decided to ship. Because we were building, were also bought whatever we could, knowing the container cost was covered. Horizon was also a shipper then and the one we used. We bought a 20ft container, put a brand new tractor and implimements in that, plus building material, and what we figured we'd need when we first arrived. That container sat on our property 4 months waiting for us to move. The cost to ship was the same whether we owned the container or not. Container itself was about $2K. We still have it.
When we finally moved, we did a 40 ft, stuffed to the gills, including our jeep which for some reason they forgot to charge additional. Did we bring too much, yea likely so, but we saved enough on want we did ship that it paid the shipping. Probably not too many on here shipped a 39k gallon ingound swimming pool, but we did. Smile
My very last shipment was a box built onto a pallet and shipped via DHX, forget the pounds/cost, but cheaper than the cost of the contents. This was all the tools etc I needed to get the mainland house ready for sale after moving.

A fun adventure

Matson's informational message had a familiar tone to it and I couldn't place it for quite a while. Then remembered it was made using Xtranormal!

we are also using the "ship or buy" ratio. If it's near as much to ship our old one as to buy new, why not just buy new there? We are very thrifty people and don't want to spend several thousand dollars we will need to buy a house for shipping all our clutter and crap. I'm sure there are clearance sales and garage sales there where we can get most of the everyday stuff we need, (need to be patient to do that) and walmart should be cheaper since the stuff only has to be shipped halfway from china.

exactly sputnut. It's nice to get all new stuff isnt it? Anyhow, Walmart isnt cheaper, but it's still practically as cheap as the mainland.

Wuzzerdad,
Matson charges about $200 more to ship a 40 ft container vs. a 20ft.
Might as well go for the 40.

ETA:
The phone number I called was 888-562-8766.
