what the heck is that horrible stink?

electronics 101 - all circuits have a power loss - building small 1kw generators at the point of use is the Japanese solution (before fukashima - grin)

I think that in the end is the most energy wise model - the delay in bringing to market a cheap reliable direct system like fuel cells has been the hang up for them in nationwide implementation

Its all about the size and temperature of the inductor and distance from he load

PV - its about storage - that nut hasnt been cracked yet - see dreamliner.....

grid - peak high demand loads being the killer - some east coast power systems experimenting with free nights and weekends - I wonder what that is all about.... seems a wild way to even the loads....

The whole "storing power from PV" issue is only a problem for off-grid installations.

Air conditioning is the best example: it's needed most when the weather is hot, which is coincidentally when the most solar energy is available. This is especially true for offices which are only occupied during "business hours".

Another thread mentions that PGV has enough capacity to handle the entire off-peak load. Assuming this is true, an island-wide grid with plenty of grid-tied PV "peak" + the PGV "off-peak" would leave very little need for coal/diesel-fired power plants.

All of this technology is currently available, but HELCO has zero incentive to "modernize".

Ahhh... "HELCO your rates are too high".....HELCO install a better transmission grid" HELCO make everyone happy you evil monster.
Choices,Choices...sigh

All at cost plus with no competitor in sight.

Helco - "beat me some more"

Some one signed off on a six million dollar a year pay package for their president ..... six million dollars buys a lot of wire

or a good return for the investors - or a power line PGV all the way out to the light rail power plug....

No one is forced to hook up. There are other and better options.

Well didn't find out what the smell was, however I did talk to the non emergency number at the fire dept and was told that because we live on a geothermally active island that if it was to happen again we should call the fire dept immediately as they will come out and sample the air to help determine what it is and if it's safe.
