Most large dogs & many smaller dogs are capable of killing people (i.e. have teeth strong enough for ripping flesh, jaws large enough to fit over vital areas, and ancestral hunt instict and any fluffy dog can change in a hungry pack scenerio).
Most of my larger dogs have mainly been tripping hazards, but that too could kill a person.
If any of you have ever seen how pit animals (remember, pit fighting is not only for one breed of dog) are trained, you would not blame the animal for the actions (what humans will do to have the "excitement of the game" ... ie gambling).
With any animal, before getting it you know as much about the animal & must be prepared to give it the proper care & training, or not get an animal... unfortunately many people are not willing to put in the time & research, & obtain animals more on a whim.
(flip side of this is that many fight animals are gotten with more time & research spent to find a "fighter".... what humans will do for money!)
But I am speaking only as one who has never understood any gambling (bubble gum machines in LV pay out much better than the slots, based on one time, one quarter playing) & always have had dufus dogs that would rather play outside & sleep than anything else, kinda like their owner....

Dogs Bite....period they are not taught to bite they are taught not to bite, plain and simple.....many people unconsiously teach there animal not to bite and report that they have a breed of dog that would never bite anyone.......nope, they bite, all of them big small male female . The other simple fact is The American Pit Bull Terrier gets a bad rap because it doesn't just bite it mames and kills when it attacks and this is an inherent characteristic of the breed as someone mentioned they don't just bite they bite grip and hold on till the prey is dead or lifeless. So many reports tell of animals that have had to be killed during the attack so the victim could be freed sadly these victims are usually young children, perhaps it is their innocence and immature actions that provoke the attacks, whatever the bottom line is they become victims and the rap lays with the pitbull and rotties and even others, as it should.
I've own German Shepherd Dogs forever and everyone of them has shown me they could and would bite if allowed. I can't count the number of times i've used the phrase, to them all, " No Biting " Through the years I've learned not to wait and see as soon as their mouths approach anyone they get a reminder, No Biting. Even some thirty years later I'm always aware to the fact that they can bite. It is in this that I tell those who have questioned me about owning the breed that the responsibilty and the potential never ends. Even in Hawaii where the pitbull is so popular for protection, hunting, and good companionship the reports are still to be read, that they, when given the chance mame and kill for no good reason I also think you will find that it is not just people they will attack most anything when they get in the zone.....
So perhaps the Michael Vics of the world did do something terribly wrong . He, they chose this breed for a reason because it is a perfect killing machine. True, they do use some pretty inhumane training techniques but the potential was already there.
It still remains a matter of choice for those of us who think we can own such a potentially dangerous breed of dog and not be questioned for it. Be responsible it is the right thing to do and above all keep it leashed, well socialized and in control 24/7 and always remember these stories.....
"Several reported dog attacks that critically injured or killed people in Hawaii:

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the BSL movement thats sweeping the country. BSL is Breed Specific Legislation and with the intense coverage of any all dog attacks (particularly those by bully breeds), bans and restrictions have been enacted all across the world.
Here is a short list of some banned breeds (banned in certain areas, that is):
American Pit Bull Terrier
American Bulldog
Doberman Pinscher
Rottweiler
German Shepherd
Tosa Inu
American Staffordshire Terrier
Bull Terrier
Staffordshire Terrier
Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Mastiff
Bullmastiff
Presa Canario
Cane Corso
Europe is the hotbed of Breed Specific Legislation with six or seven countries having active BSL - Germany, Netherlands, France and Spain being the worst places to have a banned breed.
There are some states in the US, some provinces in Canada and Australia that all have BSL Bans that are strongly enforced.
Why Is BSL Ineffective?
If an individual has a strong desire to train a dog to attack, no amount of BSL will stop that person. Golden Retrievers have been trained to seek out and attack human beings - the breed is not an issue, rather it is the lack of proper training/socialization and the dangerous practice of training dogs to be guard dogs (as opposed to watch dogs who are not trained to attack but merely “watch”, as their name implies). Why are certain breeds more prevalent in dog attack statistics? Not because there are somehow more of those particular dogs existing but that more of the dogs are being owned by abusive or simply neglectful individuals who do not neuter their dogs, allow their animals to roam free and never socialize their animals, or who purchase their animal for the wrong reasons (ego).
The banning of specific breeds has been shown NOT to decrease the number of attacks or maulings. Why? Well, those same individuals who would have owned a Rottweiler or a Pit Bull are simply turning other breeds of dogs into killers. Other breeds simply replace the banned breeds as top maulers. Any dog can be trained to be aggressive towards humans and any dog that is not properly socialized can become dangerous.
The list of organizations that are against BSL is staggering - they are reputable agencies and groups who realize that owners of dangerous dogs need to be held responsible but that no particular breed is more or less likely to possibly attack. Some of the agencies/organizations are: AKC (American Kennel Club), UKC (United Kennel Club), AVMA, CDC (Centers for Disease Control), ASPCA, SPCA’s, most Human Societies, most Animal Control Facilities, ADBA (American Dog Breeders Association), ADOA (American Dog Owners Association), most breeders and rescue groups as well as reconstructive surgeons for children whose groups have stated that a bite to the face of a child can be devastating REGARDLESS of the breed of dog who inflicted the wound.
Im afraid if Breed Specific Legislation Passes here... Insurance companies wont insure your property when you have certain breeds of dogs. I have thought about this alot because I own Rotts.
To me it is a issue just like the gun issue. The owner is at fault not the gun. If you train the dog to be violent it will be.
The kicker is American Family Insurance already bans Rotts and Pitts but not pinschers, chows, akitas, german shepards and other strong dogs.

Aloha All,
Good discussion. I own a rescued Rottweiller. His owners had him and another male Rott on short ropes, almost nose to nose, and we believe he was trained to fight other dogs. A friend rescued both of them, but they were unmanageable because they fought if they got near one another.
My personal experience with Rotts is that they are large, lovable, loyal family dogs. That said, I believe they are dangerous. Scoof has scared me a couple of times. I don't think he would bite me, but he has snapped at me. He is huge, heavy and formidable. Fast as lightening. If he does turn on me or anyone else, he's going to win, no doubt. I am responding with super-bonding, letting him know I love him and care about him, always--playing on the pack-bond. I am VERY careful with him, never off-hand, always purposeful and aware.
I also rescued 2 Rott/Springer crosses as puppies, a brother and sister. Sammy got mean as he got older--I believe he was in pain with arthritis. One day he lunged at a little boy and scared the bejeezus out of me. He was on a leash, but he was so strong that, if he wanted to go somewhere, we went. From that day on, I kept him far away from children. I was afraid of what he might do some day--it was definitely like having a loaded gun. Sam was loved, loved, loved. He was treated kindly always. He was a great guy, lovable and sweet, dependable, a great friend. But at the end of his life he was unreliable around children. (My neighbors may have had something to do with Sam's attitude since they occasionally yelled at him or threw things at him. I couldn't control their behavior toward him. I tried.)
Both these male dogs are too strong for even a strong man to control when they are intent on something. Period. Uncontrollable. I was bowled over, literally, and hurt by Sam when he chased a cat one night and ran into me.
I say, stick to a breed that you can control physically. (And who can't run you over.)
************************************
Beachboy, please watch your dog with your small child. Never leave the child alone with the dog. I don't care how lovable the dog is, instinct can and does take over in dogs at random and they will attack. There are stories of dogs attacking babies in those auto swing things. Is it the movement? Possibly. Dogs descend from wolves. At times, ancient instincts overwhelm the best of them. And dogs' personalities change with time--just like humans'. Sometimes they are grouchy.
I would never own a pit bull, especially if I had children. Frankly, although I love Scoof (and Sam) I would never have more Rotts. Sam's sister, Ruby, is very sweet and submissive. Females often are more docile. She seems to have more Springer traits.
If I get a new dog, it will be a Springer Spaniel or similar breed. Perhaps it is true that all dogs will or occasionally do bite. In that case, I'd rather be attacked by a chihuahua than a pit or rott.

Being a spectator at a dogfight is currently a felony in 20 states, a misdemeanor in 28 and legal only in Georgia and Hawaii.
One thing I didn't read in this post is... Hawaii has weak laws be it chicken, dog or whatever fighting they do around here. I think the best thing to do is support your local humane society in beefing up large penalties for joining in these activities.

"... please watch your dog with your small child. Never leave the child alone with the dog."
People should watch their dogs with some residents of Hawaii. Never leave some residents alone with the dog. The legislature voted down last year a law that would have banned dog eating.

To ban a breed of dog is absolutely CRAZY, and who get's to play GOD with this? Again, not to sound redundent but it's the owner, not the breed!!!!
It's easy to do a "google search", and post numbers. But how many of you who dislike this breed of dog have had an actual personal encounter with a Pit Bull to make your statements about them being killers? I find most people who are negative about Pit Bulls have never actually had any experience whatsoever with a Pit Bull but go on media clippings etc,etc...
I leave my 18 month old son with our Pit Bull alone, she is highly protective to a fault I guess. She knocks over my son a lot trying to kiss him!
