Free range chickens
#21
PM me if you want a free tame rooster. I won't take the crowing much longer and it will wind up in the freezer or in a pot.

Laying hens, unless they are at the end of their useful laying life, usually run about $50/each. Pullets (hens older than chicks but too young to lay... I guess juveniles is an acceptable adjective) can be had much cheaper.... sometimes free if you network or craigslist regularly. You also need to take into consideration what type of hen you want as that's very important. Do you want large eggs? Brown eggs? White eggs? Dark brown eggs? Green eggs? Blue eggs? Pink eggs? Do you prefer quantity over size? Do you want broody hens? Dumb hens? Smart hens? There's a lot more to having chickens than just having chickens.

Sent you PM. Thanks. Hope there is a way that I can get one today. Yes, a tame one has benefits. We actually had one back on the mainland we named "Baby" because it wanted to be petted and held. The girls are settling in, but are rather skittish.

Thanks Terracore...Pepe'is settling in...he must be a young rooster...no crowing yet. Some of the hens larger than he is, so initially was "hen pecked" but they seem to be all settled down now. Thanks again! We got seven eggs yesterday from the nine hens...I think that is probably a fluke, but it was a nice surprise. At least we are not having to have an egg hunt. They seem to enjoy their fenced in yard.

Yes, he is a young rooster and will get bigger. He was already mounting the hens so should be considered to be "fully functional" even if he hasn't started crowing yet at his new place.

Happy to have found him a home, thanks for stopping by.
