That land slide in Washington is horrible but extremely awesome. It looked like the whole side of a small mountain just sheared away. Yes, there is a clear cut above it. There are multiple places around Washington and Oregon that have landslides that can be directly associated with the clear cuts above them. And they are clear cutting like crazy now for some reason. Back to the government, Obama just declared it a federal disaster area. Probably the same will happen here.

There have been major earthquakes in Puna - the entire south flank of Kilauea is unstable and periodically slides out into the ocean by several feet - that's how the Hilina Pali got there... The last major event was 1975 when a M 7.6 earthquake occurred. There have also been major submarine landslides - that happen very rarely - that produce complete devastation: large chunks of the island fall into the ocean and generate tsunami that are estimated to be as high as 1000'. The shoreline of Kohala north of Waipio valley was created that way; Mauna Loa also produced a series of slides that are visible on detailed bathymetry maps. When one of those happens, most of the state's population in areas near the shoreline will be killed. Could happen tomorrow, or not for another 100,000 years...
But landslides like those in WA state, aren't known to occur in Puna - more likely in Hamakua where there is deep soil.
Added: The issue of a Pacific-wide disaster from a major landslide is still being debated - most likely, any wave generated by a Hawaii landslide would be pretty small by the time it got to the continents...

I lived through a couple floods out in Gold Bar, Wa. So when I think about this volcano and the current flow, I'm not exactly impressed when it comes to it's "danger". I've had my back yard flooded into my tool shed etc and watched a friends house break in half and fall into the river and also watched an entire house and the 30' tall dirt bank it was sitting on slip into the same River, 30 minutes later I saw the body of a kayaker and his gear float by.
I posted pictures on that day in 2006 to my old weather station account and it appears they are still up.

If that link doesn't work directly, just type in "sky valley flood" and those results are the pictures I took that day.
I think when it comes to feeling safe from natural disaster, I feel safer here than anywhere else I've ever lived.

The 1868 Kau earthquake produced a mudslide 3 miles long near Wood Valley that killed a lot of people. It could easily happen again.

A couple weeks ago a bunch of time and money was spent planning for a terrorist attack in Hilo. But does the State, County or Feds do any contingency planning for a much more likely lava event? Even if only thought experiments and what if planning?
For example, suppose the lava cuts 130 at Ainaloa, what would it take to improve the road through Waa Waa? Trucks, gravel, time, money, etc.
Suppose the Helco lines are cut, would it be possible to use the Geothermal plant to supply lower Puna?
If the flow goes to the ocean, what about a route through the National Park?
And in a big event, say lower Puna getting cut off, where would thousands of evacuees go?
Etc.....
Isn't this what civil defense should be doing?

I think the questions is, how are you going to respond to the Lava flow?

Oh stop whining! We all bought out here knowing that this could be our future and now you want the government to step in and save you. Why do you think real estate is so cheap here? It’s no different than forest fires consuming your home or if you live in a flood plain or buy your house on the side of one of the most active volcanoes in the world.
You can’t change it so deal with it. Call me when the lava reaches Hwy 130 I’m busy.

They do have a plan - and you identified it - last I heard, it is to open up access to chain of craters road to maintain transport into and out of lower Puna. Won't be convenient, or quick, but you will still be able to get in and out. Don't know what the plan is for maintaining power and telephone to lower Puna - and that may be more difficult since it will take much more time to install an alternate coms/power corridor - as in through the national park, as in never...

Ah, Kahunascott --I've missed you. Too funny. We will text you when the lava reaches Hwy 130.
