I just looked at the DOT proposed STIP for 2015-2018 and there is nothing proposed for highway 130. NOTHING! This means that another 4 years will go by without so much as planning for improvement of that road. Wow. Somebody please tell me I'm wrong.

Right.
For the past decade, one or the other of the intersections from Keaau to Pahoa have had highest rates of crashes of any road the DOT has responsibility for in the entire state.

Fortunately the PCDP says "drive to Hilo", not Pahoa. Problem solved!

I spend about a month per year on Maui staying in Kihei. It's amazing that with a much smaller population they have 2 full time lanes in each direction from Kahului to Wailea. The difference? Rich residents and rich tourists.

They are also not in the same lava zone, but I agree, money does have something to do with it.
