1. Where was all this concern for the "illegal and unethical activities" when the US overthrew the sovereign Kingdom of Hawaii?
2. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of illegal cesspools and unpermitted jungalows all over the island. Will DLNR enforce regulations against individuals, or just VGS?
3. Geothermal operations also "desire to turn a profit off of State lands and our natural resources", does their payment of "royalties" make these activities magically okay?
4. Do the "anti-sustainability" folks have any constructive suggestions as to what lifestyle choices would be considered "acceptable"? So far all I'm seeing is "you can't live that way because it's illegal/unethical", which is neither aloha nor pono.
5. Will there be an "ethics complaint" every time one of our representatives puts forth a bill based on the needs of their constituency, or will this action only be taken when "certain people" disagree with the bill? Does it only apply to bills that seek to force County to write regulations that meet the needs of the people?

Consider the following thought experiment as it relates to "sustainability" and "ethics".
A bill is brought before the County Council which would allow farmers' markets as a "permitted agricultural use" in private subdivisions. The goal is to foster "sustainability" by encouraging access to locally-grown produce.
County simply refuses to hear the bill, so it dies on the table.
Later, some constituents raise this issue with their State representative, who decides it's a great idea, and drafts a State bill which seeks to require the counties to allow farmers' markets in private subdivisions.
A different contingent of that same constituency declares that the representative has behaved unethically by introducing a bill that would allow big-box retail stores to be built in the middle of private subdivisions.
Meanwhile, the people have to drive to town ("sustainably", of course) for everything...

Oh yeah, everybody wants farmers market traffic in their neighborhood every week. What a joke. You people should listen to yourselves - "it's ok because I like Graham" "it's ok because I don't like the county" "it's ok because he is a community leader" What a bunch of apologists. I suppose crime stoppers is considered snitching by some of you - but what looks like snitching to the criminals is just honesty to the rest of us. As far as needing more access to locally grown produce, with five farmers markets in Puna and counting, I call BS on that one. Besides that - many lots in Puna are 1 acre or more - plenty of land to grow your own food!
Seriously Kalakoa - I do not care how much you do not like/trust the county - that is not a reason to then disobey the laws on the books. If you don't like something - change it! Run for county council or something constructive. Not respecting the law is no reason to break it. Maybe democracy isn't for you. That's okay, we can go back to a monarchy and you can bow to the king when he passes by.

As a general rule, DLNR does not enforce waste water rules on private land. That is a SOH DOH function.
As a general rule. DLNR does not enforce permitting issues on private land. That is a COH Building Division, Engineering and Planning Dept function.
And those departments typically enforce what they get complaints about, or if the infraction is close to something else they are inspecting and they see it they might do something. But that is what typically happens - the situations similar to the House of Cards is also typical scenario.
Notice the use of the word "typical" or "typically". Sometimes nothing here follows the typical.

The last time I heard such bleeding heart left wing socialist blabber was when I lived in Mendocino - what a bunch of ass hats there. They also tried to fight the county building code and permit structure in Mendo. They lost in Ukiah and they lost here too. Get over it.
No bitterness Mendo - just a burning desire for order and justice ;-)

Oh, I'm so sorry -- didn't realize you'd been through all that already.
That said, it sounds like a "frying-pan-into-the-fire" scenario.
A nice town lot (preferably on another island) might have been a better choice.

And that is exactly where it belongs at the end of a road not in a subdivision where everyone else has to obey the subdivision covenants. Pahoated, thanks for that great comment you have your finger on the pulse of this story!

Unbelievable that people have built structures on public lands and making money off of them. Just wrong!
