The rates might be just a little lower if we weren't subsidizing all of these health studies and paying people 130% of their property value !!!

We are now paying to purchase property that was purchased well after the geothermal plant went into full output !!!

Obie, it's rediculous to blame high electricity rates on a health study that has not happened, or on relocating people that are not being relocated.

"Between 1998 and 2012, the county approved and purchased 6 homes at a total cost of $698,466. All 6 of these homes were built prior to the construction of the power plant, and within one mile of its location.

Prior to 2012, a total of $3,338,406 was spent on community benefits for the Puna district. Among those benefits were $700,000 for the Pahoa Transfer Station, $800,000 for road repaving, and $380,000 for the purchase of a Hele-On Bus to service the Pahoa area.

Since 2012, the county has designated 25 homes for purchase, at a tentative total cost of $5,437,649 (there is currently not enough money in the fund to cover those purchases, and details of some of them still must be worked out). Of these, 24 WERE BUILT AFTER THE POWER PLANT"S CONSTRUCTION, though all are located within one mile of PGV."

Sounds like PGV should be the one screaming "NIMBY!"

blame high electricity rates ... on relocating people that are not being relocated.

Fine, let's ignore relocation:

Prior to 2012, a total of $3,338,406 was spent on community benefits

Where did that $3.3M come from? Better question: if it were evenly divided against all HELCO bills, how much of a rate reduction is that? A penny per KWh? A nickel?

Exactly. ALL taxes and fees levied against a business come directly from the consumer. Taxing a business only takes money away from... you and me... Those geothermal funds didn't come from PGV - it was us in the form of higher electric rates.

Go solar! Independent system.

Great option for those who can afford the cost and maintenance, but it doesn't stop the drain on the economy. Example: Walmart runs on HELCO, and passes the costs along...

Some of the members of the current group "Puna Pono" (God, that name turns my stomach) and the other plantiffs should have finished the job, and closed the plant down at the time if it was such a detriment to our community. Instead, they accepted over $2 million dollars in "settlement". Auwe!

Are you equally upset with county, state, and PGV for using our money to settle what are implied to be baseless claims without merit?

Pretty irresponsible to pay out millions of dollars when the science has so 'clearly demonstrated' there is "no correlation between the geothermal plant, and health issues."

(BBM) Absolutely. Except it is County funds used, not the State, nor PGV.

Especially when as Obie states:

"Since 2012, the county has designated 25 homes for purchase, at a tentative total cost of $5,437,649 (there is currently not enough money in the fund to cover those purchases, and details of some of them still must be worked out). ETA: Did not address the relocation issue, as this thread is about PDF. Apologies for the O/T, however, wanted to respond to Ironyak.
