I understand that there is a proposal for a "centralized" library so the school libraries won't be open to the public any more.

I don't know where it's planned to be (hope it's Keaau), but love the idea of not having to hassle with the awful parking at Mt. View library any more.

Being open on the weekend also since that's when kids aren't in school.

Maybe it could also have some type of auditorium / meeting hall attached for random events like civil defense meetings, or maybe public educational efforts for eliminating fire ants and albizia.

Probably in Hilo, but ubiquitous broadband would be a better investment than an expensive climate-controlled building to house dead trees.

Correct -- although I'm sure there will be "public" sessions where the planners "solicit input".

The bigger problem: PCDP was supposed to "prevent sprawl". Anyone who has had to visit the "three corners of Keaau" knows it's too late for that, and the new plan doesn't do anything to improve the situation.

Public Notice for a Proposed General Plan Amendment Workshop Meeting for 6/1/15 @ 5:30 pm at the Kea‘au Community Center and 6/3/15 has been issued. It is on the revisions to map 14 and changing Land Use Designations in Kea'au.

Thanks, I=t was published in todays (Friday 5/15) Trib Herald.
They have changed the designation from the original proposed "Urban Expansion" to "Medium Density", perhaps due to the last workshop...where the PDP reps were not pleased with the UE designation..

This highlights HOW important it is to stay on top of things, as the COH planners at the original workshop thought they had done interpreted the PDP correctly, and it was only the community members that pointed out their ....lack of correct interp that may have gotten this change...

And based on this, I will again go to this workshop, as it seems that the planners interp is totally based on the community members....or the powers that wanted this change in the first place!

The Planning Director is initiating an amendment to Map 14 of the County of Hawaii General Plan LUPAG Map by changing the land use designation for portions of Keaau Village and immediately surrounding areas as follows:

A-1: Low Density Urban to Medium Density Urban encompassing a contiguous area of approximately 475 acres from the intersection of Keaau-Pahoa Bypass Road and Highway 11 (Volcano Highway) extending south of Kukula Street and then in a westerly direction to the boundary of the Keaau Ag Lots Subdivision to the Highway 11-Old Volcano Highway intersection along the Old Volcano Highway leading to the Village core.

A-2: Important Agricultural Land to Medium Density Urban encompassing the triangular area of approximately 112 acres from Kukula Street-Keaau Bypass Road intersection south to the Keaau Bypass Road-Keaau Pahoa Road intersection, and then approximately to the northeastern corner of the Keaau Ag Lots Subdivision.

A large parcel in the Hilo area needs to be set aside for a larger UH Hilo campus. It is way too small to serve Hilo down the road.

A split campus like Michigan's needs to include student housing, larger rec fields, and focus on sciences and research.
