It's true, they'll steal our rocks. The good ones too:
WAILUKU, Maui — State conservation officers are investigating three O'ahu men who came to Maui on the Hawaii Superferry allegedly to load their three pickup trucks with river rocks and return to O'ahu. http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/articl...20411.html

Rocks were intentionally taken from Maui and brought to Oahu on the previous superferry to inflame Hawaiians that considered this kapu.
I crossed the channel too and agree that most boats should not do it on a regular basis. A vessel needs to have a very wide platform and high buoyancy sides. Like Waterworld' trimaran. Like my trimaran. I own a vessel that can safely and easily take dozens per trip. It is the world's largest paraw and 75 feet long and 40 feet wide. It was made in USA If someone is interested the main hurdle for starting a ferry now is the high cost of that commercial mooring on Kona side. Alternately just the run Maui to Oahu. One hassle I have is no docking space on Oahu and Maui. Figure out that problem first.

"a very wide platform and high buoyancy sides." ...Freeboard and displacement .....
freeboard being how high out of the water, displacement - mass - resistance to being tossed about

An inter-island ferry is levels tougher than a ferry that could take passengers from Ewa to downtown Honolulu and from Hawaii Kai to Honolulu. They had one years before but they had no interconnecting anything to go along with it. No parking for when you got on the ferry, no bus at the other end. Other than that, it was a lovely ferry boat. If they'd integrate the ferry and buses it could really help out the highway situation on Oahu.
The ferry between Maui/Lanai/Molokai is pretty much in protected waters. Getting between Maui/Lanai/Molokai and Oahu isn't too much harder but that's open ocean. Between Kauai and Oahu is more open and between Maui and Hawaii can be dangerous. Kurt Wilson Kurt Wilson

...can be dangerous
Something tells me that given our ability to traverse oceans and all the other boats that already make these much shorter journeys we'll be able to manage...

the Alenuiha'ha channel may not exactly be anything to sneeze at when traversing by boat, but in response to the pessimism regarding the feasibility of some sort of ferry system being in doubt due to prohibitively rough conditions...
...all i know is that back in the early 90's i had the good fortune to make a trek from Wales to Dublin via ferry carrying both passengers and vehicles. that was a VERY dark and stormy night across the notorious Irish Sea. winds howling, driving rain, decks tilting and heaving, some passengers heaving as well, me almost included if not for the Dramamine. granted it was a huge ferry boat, but they apparently have it down like commuter's clockwork over there. |
