Tesla Battery Announcement April 30th
#21
I realize Ormat Nevada will not provide 100% of the energy, it will be a hybrid system self contained impressive hope 10MW will get the job done. Power to the peeps... http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2...rs-realize

diesel fuel from carbon dioxide
We have a very easy way here to heat water to 800 degrees Celsius...

Yes, an almost free source of heat that could be used to make fuel in Puna. It might be a good idea to build the main fuel storage facility in Keaau or Hilo though, just to be on the safe side!

speculate...?

It's all speculation until tomorrow, although a fair amount of information has leaked out already. But certainly, pull up a comfortable recliner and join the crew of the Punaweb armchair scientific community...

RJ, weren't you going to take some guesses about the announcement?
Not too many hours remaining.
Whatever it is, I expect it will just be the first step toward a series of regular improvements in electrical storage capabilities. The future may hold incremental improvements like we get with software updates, as well as great leaps in technology like those that took us from the palm pilot to the iPad, or a cell phone to a smart phone.

I don't know but I really hope that it's not a Lithium Ion battery, LI batts are nothing new and have been around for years.

LI batts,

Pros...

Low Maintenance...
Can be subjected to abuse (IE drained all the way down) without effecting life span of batter as much vs. Lead Acid.
Small Form factor / Size Vs. Charge ratio. Good for Cell Phones
Lite Weight..Good For cars and mobile apps...

Cons.....
Expensive as Hell...
Rare earth materials needed...
About the same life cycles 1000 charges typically as LA Batts.

What we need is a new tech batt, that will be A) Low Maintenance and very affordable.

With Solar batteries we don't really care about size or weight. It's not like your going to be lugging around a lead acid battery to power your cell phone and if you could, you wouldn't have to charge it for months.

Anyway... What I'm hoping to hear is a new tech type of battery that is easy to recycle, not bad for the environment, Low Maintenance, Abuse tolerant, and extremely high amperage cells. Power density IE, size/weight doesn't really matter much to me, but it would be nice if it were on the same level of LI's.

We'll see. But seeing how the stocks just dropped 5 bucks, it's probably nothing new and the same line and dance on how great LI's are. If that's the case, than why bother? Like I said, LI's are expensive and hard to recycle and use materials that are hard to get out of the earth. I think China has the most of the material on the planet for LI tech.
