Request for resident income tax return waiver

I don't believe I have ever needed to provide my physical address on either the federal or state tax returns. Just a mailing address. Your mailing address may not be your physical address.

My personal experience has been that there could be an uptick in comparing notes as to who is filing and who isnt ......

Cali just asked me for the last 4 years of "non resident returns" even though I have no cali income to report - although I am on record as a principal in cali corporations and file in Hawaii

The recent sharing of state data could be the trigger according to the person doing my taxes

Wasn't there a big rant on Punaweb about Tiffany taking the homeowners exemption at the wrong house ?

Of course, for a county council run you'd have to add a small business in Pahoa, then a crack team of investigators, maybe not a crack team necessarily but a doobie fueled, Hawaii County Tax Website perusing team...

Cali just asked me for the last 4 years of "non resident returns"

California levies income tax on any activity that "happens in California", even if neither you or the people you work for are California residents.

activity does not always equate to income - in my case we (my company cpa) have filled in the same way since the late 90's -

its the last four years they are asking for .....states are coming online to compare notes - this is the kind of fall out we can expect imho

nor are they asking for money (yet - grin) - they just want the paperwork

The letter we got says that the last 4 digits of our SS #s match tax records, so it seems that county and state ARE sharing info. I think they just didn't have the means to separate the database. Or it was just easier to send to every single property owner and screw the wasted funds. Also, note the form only has check boxes for 2 scenarios: you are going to file a state return within 12 months, or you don't make enough to file a return. I guarantee you there will be people who send in the form w/o checked boxes and get their exemption removed. Then again, I'm a pessimist.

Checked today and there was no prepaid envelope, so won't return a blank form.

This is really something. If you don't check one box or the other, or don't send it in, the home exemption on the property tax will be dropped. Didn't really read it closely until recently but the cover letter said this is due to a new county ordinance. What it does is take the ambiguity of primary residence out of contention. The property tax exemption on the primary residence now depends on the resident filing a state income tax, or not enough state income to file. The address on the state income tax and the primary residence claimed will need to be the same. That is really going to tighten the rope in south Puna. Very interesting how the county finessed this one. It does mean more money in our ohana treasury.

My letter said they didn't have my SS#, guess not everybody's getting the same requests.
