Food prices on the rise
#21
One of the reasons for the high food prices is the price of diesel. While gas prices have gone down considerably diesel hasn't. If you look diesel is about $1.50 a gallon more than gas. Diesel trucks deliver almost all of our food.

You must be going in the early morning. The only cheap bacon I've found at Walmart is turkey bacon.

Interesting, I just found out that my Long's purchases have qualified for double Hawaiian miles on the Hawaiian credit card.

Truth is, this island is for laying around and relaxing. Nobody wants to be stuck in an office or sweating in a field or rendering meat all day. This article has numbers on meat on the island. I thought at least most pork would come from this island, nope. 95% pork, goat, lamb are imported. At the time, it was 83% beef imported, probably up to 90% with Parker phasing out beef for the local market. The more people talk about sustainability around here, it seems they aren't using the right word. It is helpless dependence, not sustainability.

The article you posted defined the problem: no legal and also affordable way to process meat here.

We raise / hunt much of our own meat and it works because we do the processing ourselves. No store would ever buy our meat, or nearly anybody else's, so it gets imported from factories on the mainland.

Seems to me Safeway's $5 Friday isn't what it was 6 months or so ago. Used to be several items to get my interest, but lately maybe just 1 or 2 which means if I'm not going to HD or somewhere else I don't go to Safeway. Wife did some meat on sale there this week. Personally, I not the type to scour the ads then drive all over hoping to get the sale items at each location, not worth the time or cost of travel to my thinking. Even though there are only the two of us, I'll opt for the larger, value pack and then break up for use. Love my vac sealer!! Works great for cooked stuff too.

A reminder to everyone - It is the 1st of the month - locally known as " Welfare week " . All prices except for a very few "Lost leaders " go UP for the 1st 10 days of every month when every one gets their Welfare / EBT / Pensions / Social security.
Safeway has gone way down in quality /quantity on what is offered on 5 dollar Fridays . Even their discounted fuel seems of lesser quality according to the work horses under the bonnet.
Safeway is over priced and mainly all imported .
