Where to buy Appliances
#21
The warranty prices, as well as the appliance prices themselves, are negotiable at Sears and Home Depot. Keep that in mind...

We need to replace our microwave so I went to HD and was admiring a nice shiny Samsung model they had. I've probably been living under an alibzia tree or something but I didn't even realize Samsung made appliances. Best yet, it was on sale and the sale ends tomorrow! I'm the opposite of an impulse shopper so I took a picture of the microwave plus the deets and looked for reviews online. What I found out was 1) The microwave was about $50 cheaper on amazon with free prime shipping and 2) The reviewers crucified it. Over 50% rated it 1 star. On the other hand, a similar (and cheaper) GE model scored 4.5 stars and further research determined it was also a Consumer Reports recommended model.

It looks like that for smaller appliances at least, online is the way to go if you can get it shipped for free.

Bought a Samsung washer and dryer from Lowes in Kona two years ago. Last week, washer decided to flood the floor. Fortunately, it was a slow flood. We have an extended warranty on it but Lowes would not help us. I figured, I'd open it up and see if I could do something. Turned the water level pressure switch hose slipped of the tub attachment making the machine "think" it was never filling up. Turns out Samsung used a very flimsy spring clamp to hold the hose.
I reattached the hose, cleaned up the mess and so far the machine is working. I left the back off so I can monitor what's happening.
You'd think after a hundred years humans would have perfected the washing machine, I know they don't know a thing about customer service!
....just a ramble to warn the wary.

We are mainland but envision our life there a bit like camping - we might want the stove in a covered outdoor area, for example.

Thoughts on camping gear, such as this?

Or perhaps this built into an outdoor cabinet?

Second the camp chef model Tink posted. We've had one for years and it's awesome. Makes WAY better baked chicken than the inside electric stove (propane contains a lot of water vapor that helps to steam the meat and keep it moist). Best of all it sips propane. You'll refill your BBQ tank several times before having to refill the camp stove/oven. And the burners are spaced perfectly for a cast iron griddle. We use ours in our screened/covered lanai where it serves to save energy $ consumption but also you can bake a chicken etc without heating up the inside of your house. It CAN get blown out by wind gusts so recommend putting it somewhere that has a wind break (not indoors) if you're in a windy area.
