Russell in Wonderland
#21
DaVinci, it would help if Russell used facts, and not fiction (he took a hit on the GMO issue because of his chosen "experts"). That's the problem (won't even address the geothermal comment; too far off base). Try search the bills and the positions taken, which is not being a "pain in everyone's ass", it's being ineffective due to lack of hard proof (for each and every issue, thus far).

BTW, the Shipman family has been here for seven, perhaps eight (or more), generations. Yes, if they get their "damn baby way", it's because they are part of the core (na'au) of Puna. They are not going anywhere, neither are the Lymans. Large land owners protect their assets, and the community as a whole. Can't make everyone happy, but I know the Shipmans (long before Mr. Walter) and they are of great substance; as is he.

Wonderland, indeed.

P.S. Oh, and align yourself with the likes of Puna Pono, etc., and the credibility (in Oahu) sinks to yet another level. JMO, again.

Richard Ha's article (2014) during the GMO debate (which Ruderman subsequently apologized to Mr. Ha for his personal attack):

The only thing I will add to Opihikao's post is the utter disregard Ruderman gave to the scientific method. I cannot and will not support him.

http://www.bigislandchronicle.com/2013/0...in-kapoho/

"As for the pseudonym-afflicted person questioning Jeffrey Smith’s expertise, no response is needed. If one is familiar with the GMO debate, one cannot question Jeffrey’s qualifications to speak on the subject."

To tell people, including scientists, that Jeffrey Smith's qualifications can't be questioned, was disgraceful and utterly patronizing. Jeffrey Smith has no qualifications in science, but Ruderman wanted that fact to be ignored because Smith's views coincided with Ruderman's.

Thanks for this reminder. I too refuse to support anti-science candidates. I think his election emboldened all manner of woo and magical thinking advocates and that's the last thing this district needs more of. It's why I can't vote for Ruggles either although she seems like a decent person with her heart in the right place.

Aloha, Mr. Tom. Standing in agreement. This is the Big Island Video News report which, in my view, removes the rhetoric, and gets down to "brass tax" of the issue. (Sorry, HiloPuna, if I used quotations wrong, however, I use the " for old sayings that may "fly over some heads" during my dissertation. Kala mai.)

Now, if we are going to discuss, PMAR, geothermal (again), I will, heretofore, post in the proper thread accordingly.

Aloha ahiahi to all.

JMO.

ETA: P.S. You see the akamai wahine introducing the candidates? I am proud to say she is one of our "hanai wahine koa". So proud of this keiki o ka aina (yes, she's from Puna).[Smile] Oh, and can someone teach Ruderman (and many others) how to say "PUNA", please (like "nails on a chalkboard" Ugh!)? It's POO-NA (emphasis on "POO", not "NA", for the record). Listen to how Mr. Walter says it, and that is the correct pronounciation.

ophikao,
As long as we're making observations tonight I hope you won't mind one more. The term getting down to brass tacks, as one theory goes, was derived from the upholstery business:

When working with the brass-headed tacks, either to attach the upholstery or to remove it, the craftsperson could be said to be getting to the heart of the matter. Therefore, according to this theory, "getting down to brass tacks" first came to acquire its meaning in the upholsterer's shop.

Aloha ahiahi, HOTPE (2 mo'opuna down to rest, 1 more to go...[xx(] bless them.) I love it. Mahalo. Your posts have continued to impress the (my) feeble mind (your posts are "full of pearls".) [Smile]

I'm waiting for the candidates to voice an opinion on TMT, the Hawaiian Homes issues, OHA, etc., too. The decisions continue to come out of Oahu ($$$), and Puna needs strong representation going forward.

Rest well. Tomorrow is yet another day.

JMO.

But he still won't have any answers, or taken any action. He has responded exactly the same way multiple time to the same citizens when asked to address an issue "I need to learn more about that" or words to that effect, even when asked over the span of years. Basically he is good at chasing votes but not good at governing, just what we want to reward with a job promotion to State senate from county councilor.

I have personally experienced this recently, as have several friends. Ilagan thinks it is enough to smile, appear thoughtful, and be inoffensive, but we need more. Ruderman does present a problem to me because of his past obsession with some very shaky GMO "science." He seems to have backed away from that somewhat, though, and looking at the bigger picture, there are superseding issues.

Ilagan's alignment with the established state senate good old boy power structure is very problematic for me. These are the people who have kept Puna on the back burner for decades. They might throw Ilagan an occasional crumb, but I don't see them changing their Oahu based priorities. I would rather have a senator who will poke these guys in the eye rather than roll over as they continue on their merry way. Also, Ilagan shows every indication of seeking to become a career politician. Ruderman has at least accomplished something in the real world and brought some attention to the way Puna has been treated.

As for Ilagan's frenetic campaigning, he literally has very little else to do, having no real job and accomplished minimally on the council.

I have some reservations, but Ruderman gets my vote.

Isn't the Big Island home to a mere 10% of the State population?

What priorities "should" we be expecting, in that case?
