I am often one of the more cynical people on Punaweb, but I think ohiagrrl's ideas have merit on several levels. First, I don't think it could do any harm. Second, at least somebody is trying something instead of just posting rants on line. And finally, we may not have time for the usual preliminary studies, large control groups, and statistical analyses that more hardcore science requires. There's enough science in her initial thesis and method to make me want to give it a chance.

OG, Good to hear from you. Have you sent your findings to the university folks such as J.B.Friday? It's always good to have several irons in the fire.
If you contacted the university how did they respond?

I've been throwing ashes from my firepit around plants and trees for years. I was told to do it because it was good for the soil. The ashes spread around the ohia doesn't have to be ohia ashes but any kind of ashes from your fire pit. But as a practical matter, yes, it is a good idea to burn the infected ohia and never allow it to leave your property.
Ohiagrrl, I believe you meant to say "furo" and not "fudo". Furo is the Japanese bath tub.

Sorry, Furo is indeed a Japanese bath and is a legal means of having an unpermitted, outdoor fire in Hawaii County. Imu, Smokehouse, Furo/Fudo. 808.
Response from all public officials has been tepid or non existent. The budget is smallish Residents need to participate if anything is to be done soon enough to make a difference. Incoming Fed $ will be lean in the next four years. There is a pre existing residential forestry initiative at the DLNR with some cost sharing but it is designed for those who own 5 acres or more. Most of us have three or less. Irene of that program informed me that some neighbors in Volcano with adjacent lots qualified for funding by banding together. Changes would have to go through legislature to make it available to the majority of us. I'm sure a bunch of Punatics having a sudden resurgence of outdoor fires makes officials queasy though. Lol! It shouldn't though. Fire is an enormous part of volcanic culture. It should be celebrated and harnessed wherever and whenever possible. Those of you with COPD, that's truly horrible. My Mom died over on Maui in 2005 when cancer reached her lungs. Hawaii is a hard place to live with breathing problems. My prayers go out to you.
Hardwood packs a punch x5 in nutrients compared to softer woods. There's a whole bunch of botany behind that. Use of ash from building materials may have opposite than desired effect if used as fertilizers. I know nothing about burning woods with volatile oils like albizia, eucalyptus or Cedar. Time to pitch in folks. Think of it like a treasure hunt, where at the end we all still get to live in this beautiful watershed. We do ourselves in if we honestly keep believing someone else is going to do it for us. Looking for a brain trust.

I gotta know, did you also run with scissors as a child? I mean, this reckless behavior had to start somewhere.

Re: The guy who ran with scissors, didn't he get a book deal?
'Living in Fear on the Primal Edge' does not offer solutions, only negativity. Arguing with the wood ash theory is like saying Mother Nature does not know best. There is plasticity in the spread of this epidemic which means the solutions will likely also have to be multi tiered. You don't need permission from scientists or nay-sayers to fertilize your trees, but any extrapolation from pedigreed wonks would be greatly beneficial to this working theory. Cheer up folks this is a sliver of good news.

I believe if you look on the first page of this thread you will see I posted, in part:
"This has been one of the tenets of organic gardening, that a well fed plant with a full, balanced array of nutrients will be able to better resist and survive attacks by insects, fungus, virus, or bacteria."

Noted. Let's all avoid the trap of criticizing eachother and stick to the solutions.
