"Astronomical Society of Australia publishes new paper warning of solar quieting and global cooling
28 06 2008

http://www.astronomy.org.au/ngn/media/cl...-large.gif A new paper published by the Astronomical Society of Australia titled:

Does a Spin–Orbit Coupling Between the Sun and the Jovian Planets Govern the Solar Cycle?

contains a warning about earthly climate change not immediately obvious from the abstract:

Based on our claim that changes in the Sun’s equatorial rotation rate are synchronized with changes in the Sun’s orbital motion about the barycentre, we propose that the mean period for the Sun’s meridional flow is set by a Synodic resonance between the flow period (~22.3 yr), the overall 178.7-yr repetition period for the solar orbital motion, and the 19.86-yr synodic period of Jupiter and Saturn.

According to an interview with Andrew Bolt, of the Australian Newspaper, Herald Sun, Ian Wilson, one of the authors explained:

It supports the contention that the level of activity on the Sun will significantly diminish sometime in the next decade and remain low for about 20 - 30 years. On each occasion that the Sun has done this in the past the World’s mean temperature has dropped by ~ 1 - 2 C."

I've heard that a two degree temp drop will reverse all global warming that's occurred since the beginning of the industrial age.

Whether temperatures rise or fall or stay the same - Hawaii is a great place to be. People already come here to escape the heat and the cold.

I read somewhere that Jupiter and Mars were both experiencing climate change due to the sun... Who knows. I gotta agree with rbakker though. Either way I'd rather be in Hawaii than where I'm at now. 5 more months to go!

So, Nature is going to give us a Get Out of Jail Free card...
Hooray for Mother Nature.

So I don't have to worry any more? I can use all the gas I can afford? I can fly all over the world? I won't have to read any more critiques of Al Gore's supposed use of fossil fuels? Hooray!

Or do I now worry about an Ice Age?

I know Hawaii's temps are great now. But the question remains: how will natural forces and change affect Hawaii in the future? No one knows.

(How do we know this will happen for sure?)

By the sarcasm in your first sentence, it almost sounds as if you're disappointed that there might be some good news about climate change, April. What a terrible thing it might be that you have one less thing to worry about.

Aloha! ;-)

What would happen if the trades changed direction and blew from the S.W.? Permanently?

Your post doesn't sound full of aloha, mgeary.

I was trying to be funny. I try to stay away from sarcasm. While you seem to definitely have decided to go for it. ;-) "What a terrible thing it might be that you have one less thing to worry about." and I quote. It seemed kinda mean. Directed right at me. While I directed my statements at no one.

I'm all for being saved from ourselves. The alternative isn't pleasant to consider.
I tend to be a very serious, maybe too serious individual; very responsible and willing to go the extra mile to do my part. So, yes, you nailed me: I am concerned about the effects of fossil fuel use on the climate. If you don't worry, good for you. I find it difficult to ignore problems or people or animals who need help--I'm extremely sensitive to our plight. I'm not crazy about my level of concern and what I interpret as a need for concern--I would love to be able to ignore the bigger picture and just focus on my own little life--which is rather sweet and idyllic, actually. It just feels selfish to me. I actually consider carefully how many plane trips I take. Am I being ridiculous? ?Worrying too much, no doubt.

Do you suggest I change my lifestyle to one of more profligate use of resources with no consideration for the others who are with me in this lifeboat we call the Earth? Should I depend on this information about the sun to be true? That's what I was saying. Shall I write my posts more prosaically in order to be better understood?

Could you please give me the benefit of the doubt when you read my posts?

Tell you what: I won't reprimand you on this message board, if you don't reprimand me.

Exactly what I'd like to know, 8. Or they were just plain crazy and blew from all over with no way to predict what would happen yearly, monthly, daily? What if all bets are off? What if we don't know what will happen?

Just a different point of view, but it didnt sound like that at all. Also having met Mark it sounded just like his self-depreciating sense of humor.
