Just once I would like someone - ANYONE - explain to me why the price of a gallon of gas goes up - EVERYTIME - the price of a barrel of oil goes up! [}]
This is oil that is not even OUT of the ground yet! [] It is the FUTURE price of a barrel of oil - NOT - the actual price of the oil we are using which was pumped at a lower price WEEKS ago. [!] We are being USED either by the refineries or the local retailers.[xx(] It's happened to me - has it happened to you? You drive past a gas station one way and on the return trip notice the price has gone up .05 even .10 a gallon and you are at a loss as to WHY? [:0] Demand is down - supply is up. There is NO - shortage of supply and high demand driving prices up - so what gives? [?] It is amazing how Congress and their committees have found NO collusion in the setting of gas prices vs oil prices - Yeah! Right! [|)] Time will tell - I'm listening? Time will tell - I'm speaking?

Mene -
It's called Price-Pass Through Since each participant in this supply/marketing chain incurs some cost and wishes to make a profit, the price normally increases with each sale. As such, any change in price at the refinery, or any intermediate point of sale downstream, should be expected to affect prices at each successive sale.

Menehune, as to why the price change while you were at work...most likely the station got their tanks filled while you were at work... They are then passing the price change to you... (I have also seen the price drop during the day.) The pump price is directly tied to the tanker truck billing.... which is tied to the price at the shipping yard, tied to the price at the port, tied to the tied to the price at the refinery, tied to the price of crude in, tied to the price per barrel. So the gas you pump today is tied to the barrel price of the time the oil was pumped, then shipped, refined, stored, shipped, stored, & transported to your gas station. A lot of people get mad at the station franchise owner for the price they see, yet most owners are getting the same or less per gallon (literally cents/gal.) than a few years ago...luckily for them our demand hasn't slackened a great deal (most demand downturn is in the commercial market right now, the consummer market has yet to greatly curtail their demand...)
For everyone: Easiest way to save gas $$$ here is to figure out how to ride the bus as much as you can... or carpool with neighbors. In most subdivisions here there are quite a few people traveling in one-two person/car commutes.... if that includes you, have you checked into carpooling or Vanpool Hawaii??? if not..... gas prices are not high enough yet for you to check ....

EIA report - I know Bull_hit and gobblygook when I read it and this quailifies.[:o)]
Oil in the ground and not in the "system" has NO bearing on ACTUAL CURRENT costs.[}] "Price Pass-through" if applied to EVERY other commodity would break any economic system - OOPS - is that what's happening?[V][][xx(][!][?] Carey - your reply happened while I was typing - I understand your logic chain - BUT it seems to happen on the fly (price at the pump goes up when oil price on the market goes up) too often to be REAL. I doubt if coincidences happen that often. I have been using as much "alternate" means of transportation since gas hit $1.50. As soon as my knee is replaced - walking will dominate! Time will tell - I'm listening? Time will tell - I'm speaking?

If it makes anyone feel better... Gas Stations themselves profit VERY LITTLE from the gas they sell.
The majority of the profits come off all the other things inside the gas station. The marked up soda's, chips, cigarettes, etc. If you notice, prices of those items tend to be much more expensive then in regular store.

a gallon of milk costs more than a gallon of gas. most fancy smanshy cofee drinks cost more than a gallon of gas.

Kani,
You are lucky. The tax assessment on our lot in HPP went down $3,300, but the assessment on the house on the lot went UP $49,800, for a net INCREASE of $46,500 (=67%!!!). I am really glad I filed the paperwork for an affordable rental for the next 2-3 years until I retire and can get the homeowner exemption. The market price is the price for all identical products. It does not matter what the historical price was. If people are now willing to pay $100 a barrel, then everybody with petroleum in their tank, in the big tanks under their gas station, and in the ground, can calculate its value based on the market. When you pass a gas station and the price has gone up, maybe you can comfort yourself by realizing that you made a profit on the gas left in your tank.
I find it amusing that we are ranting about the price of gas, but in another thread members were indignant that someone would try to occupy the side of the highway with a bicycle. We should be insisting on bike paths (why not turn the railroad right of way into one) and bike lanes. Admittedly, bike paths will be safer and more pleasant than bike lanes on highways, but you have got to use the roads at some point. Aloha, Rob L
