A new helipad could be created there like Blue Hawaiian’s Waikoloa helipad. There’s power and water already available at the Pahoa Airstrip, they would just need a trailer and a parking area.
The helicopters could fly west from there directly over the Puna Forest Reserve towards Pu’u O’o or HVNP without going over homes and would be very close to any (hopefully not) possible future eruptions in the LERZ.

This would also bring those tourists into Pahoa to spend more money, the helicopter companies save money on fuel and can make flights more affordable with shorter flights.
Personally I’ve been directly under their path for many years with the Pu’u O’o eruption and it was getting really old. Since the Leilani eruption there’s not many flights over my home anymore and we’re really enjoying the peace and quiet.
That is not what they want to see.
They want to see the mountains/volcanoes, coastlines, waterfalls, valleys, lava flows, forest... They do not want a 10 minute flight.

This summer they wanted to see fissures, fountains, lava rivers and lava entering the ocean.

We got to see it on TV.
In 30 years we won't go to most parks and beaches anymore. Each of us will have a drone with cam and we'll put on virtual reality head gear and enjoy the sights from our living rooms as our drones go wherever.
That way we will avoid the DLNR safety minders that each person entering a natural resource area will be required to have (for a fee).

With the rise of Fissure 8 we had a lot of helicopters flying over HPP. I still don't see what all the whining was about.
Are people really so afraid that the Feds are coming to rip up their pot plants?

Yes, some say the lack of empathy is the root of all evil

while other's suggest its the domain of narcissists and sociopaths, but why their kind exhibit such shortcomings here is hard to say..

Lack of empathy is someone on the Hamakua coast telling people they should be grateful when lava destroys their house.

Lack of empathy is...
I thought it was "supporting helicopters' contribution to the economy (even though they're flying over someone else's house)".

lack of empathy... domain of narcissists and sociopaths
Is it possible there were people commenting on helicopter noise who didn't have pot plants on their acre of land, or who normally displayed empathy, and were not diagnosed as narcissistic or a sociopath? Maybe the constant drumbeat of 200 copters flying overhead, everyday, like the loudest low rider with a stadium sound filling subwoofer in the trunk playing the same worst song you ever heard, over and over, or maybe it's a different song but who can tell? Sometimes when three or four helicopters are passing to and from the airport simultaneously, generating overlapping backbeats, sympathetic vibrations, and sawtooth waves, it's more like a machine shop in the sky drilling and cutting and grinding, dawn to dusk. Perhaps that was the sole problem the commenters had? And when the noise went away, so did their issues?
It would be easy for the armchair psychologists on Punaweb to find out. They could read through the threads about helicopter traffic and noise caused by the lava flow between May and September 2018. See if those who posted before May or after September displayed any of the tendencies you diagnosed. If not, then maybe it's the simple explanation, noise and noise alone, and not the complex issues thet were suggested, billable (or accuse-able as the case may be) for years to come at $300 per hour.
On Tuesday night, 9/18/2018 Hawaii Senator Mazie Hirono had another message for the Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee “Just shut up and step up. Do the right thing.” She added in another related comment, “Bull$hit.”

Big difference: loud car stereo is illegal under County Code, and within County's authority to regulate ... and they don't bother, at least not in my neighborhood, same place the helicopters fly.
It's almost as if the rules and laws just don't apply in Puna, and the government authorities are totally OK with that. Too bad we can't decide not to pay "our share" of their salaries.
