"Heart" coming to the Big Island
#21
Carrie, I'm impressed with you choices of groups. Okay, I can relate to most of them too. I saw three groups from your pick that really don't do much for me though. They are, 'Supertramp'(One album wonder "breakfast in America"), 'Blue Oyster Cult'(Godzilla is the only song that I can recall that they did), and 'Rush'. Rush, pretty good, but I can take them or leave em...no problem.

Fleetwood Mac, are we talking about Peter Green era, or Lindsey Buckingham/ Stevie Nicks era? Pretty big difference between the sounds of the two eras. Personally I liked both times that Fleetwood Mac had. While living on the westside of Maui during the 70's. I was hired by John McVie to work for his house in Kahana area of Maui. Seeing that you like the music of this era Carrie. You really missed out not living on Maui...rock stars everywhere!!!! I had so much contact with rockstars it's just incredible!
I saw Jimi Hendrix play in Kula. He made a documentary/movie then called "Rainbow Bridge",filmed entirely on Maui. Guitar players for 'Lynard Skynard',picked me up hitchiking once in Kaanapali. I sold pakalolo to Rick Wakeman(Organ player for the group 'Yes') on Kaanapali Beach once. Was at the wedding for Bill Spooner(lead guitarist for the 'Tubes'). My friend steve Lendersmit, took care of Steven Stills fishing boat in Lahaina. It was the island of Rockstars back in the 70's. Today maui is still the home for Mick Fleetwood, and Pat Benatar just to name a few.
Oh, the late Randy California of the group 'Spirit' (I gotta line on you Babe)died near his home on Molokai while swimming.

back to topic. Some of my personal favorite groups of the seventies, and these are just a few mind you, and in no special order either.

1.) Rolling Stones
2.) Traffic
3.)Dave Mason
4.) Sly & the Family Stone
5.) Blind Faith
6.) Doobie Bros.
7.)Almond Brothers Band
8.) Big Brother & the Holding Co.
9.) It's a Beautiful Day
10.) the Band

How old are you Beachboy?

Oh yeah - I really liked Bare Trees...so I guess "both" would be my answers - except that I was 16 when Rumors came out and fell in love with Nicks and Buckingham era Fleetwood Mac. I did a few of Stevie's tunes back then and actually feel pain in my heart area when I hear her sing Landslide...that was my time for sure. It was a real "magical" time in my life.

I'm thinking you were a little older than me and just into a different genre...I had stuff I liked from many groups, but Dave Mason and some of the other groups you name are just not something I listened to on a regular basis.

yes Pat Benatar!! She is more of a rocker than the Wilson Sisters will ever be! Plus she showed her diversity too with a Blues CD that was released around 1980 that was awesome! I also put Joan Jett, Lydia Pense, Chrissie Hynd, Tina Turner all ahead of the Wilson sisters. Actually, Heart is barely even rock. They are more like "Pluff Rock"...almost "pop" music in nature!

Well there ya go. I'm 47 so you were in a different space when I was coming into my own.

Oh by the way Carol King - wayyyyyy before my time.

And Pat Benetar was amazing in concert a few years ago...she was really on her game - she's Julliard trained...HUGE range.

I loved Steven Perry too, who was a Julliard student...sad how that group's history has gone. Amazing voice.

P.S. You don't have to quote me every time, Beachboy...I KNOW who you are talking to. LOL

Here's a very esoteric *All Time Great* band reference.

I saw Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band at the Troubador club in Hollywood in 1970. They were hands down, the best band I have ever heard before or since. This lineup is what folks refer to as the "Classic Magic Band".

Simply unbelievable. Like Stravinksy and Debussy in a rock/deep south blues setting. The only recordings I've heard that indicate how great they were are some of the live recordings of their performances.

Peon, a duet with bass (Rocket Morton, strummed chords with steel fingerpicks and Zoot Horn Rollo on electric guitar) was a standout.

I think there are audio files on the web of them doing this live, (not the Chili Peppers version, btw).

The bands second bass player, Rocket Morton, opened and closed the show solo, furiously strumming incredible chords and rhythms on his electric bass while dancing around the stage like Chuck Berry, but moving much faster.

Other live favorites are the original Who, the Talking Heads, Jethro Tull, Mahavishnu Orchestra and too many others to mention.

All great and in their own ways & all among the worlds greatest bands, imho.

Aloha,
Lee
