Crime in Nanawale/Puna?

I agree. After the attempt to steal the vehicle, I got a monitored security system with cameras. I put up signs advertising such and have not had any more trouble.

My insurance company gives me a yearly discount for having the system, which helps offset some of the cost.

The worst part about all this is the part where you cannot shoot them without going to jail yourself according to Hawaii laws.  This is true.  I had this same discussion before with a friend who got ripped off and the officer he talked to confirmed this. 

 It wouldn't change my reaction though.  I would still probably shoot the intruder and pay the price.  It'll simply make law abiding citizens more devious when it happens.  No call to 911 after the fact.  Hide the evidence, bury them in lava tubes, run them through a wood chipper etc.  It's a messed up situation.  Just another price we have to pay for living in paradise.

In most states (even the gun friendly ones) being arrested after shooting someone is pretty much standard across the board.  This does not mean you are being charged, convicted, or sent to prison.  This is the procedure so the authorities can conduct an investigation fresh after the incident collecting evidence, statements and so forth.

I have lived in states which allow defending yourself in your home (Hawaii does too) and I also carried a concealed pistol for many years on my person and in my vehicle.  Of course all done legally and licensed. 

During classes I have taken over the years I have been advised that yes, I will be arrested after an incident but for the reasons described above.  The advice from instructors is that you respectfully make no statement and get yourself a lawyer once on the way or at the police station.

So with that said, even here in Hawaii if someone breaks into your home: "Deadly force may only be used if the person believes it necessary and the attacker has made threats of bodily harm, kidnapping, rape, or murder.

Yes, no matter what there will be consequences, it will cost you money, there will be investigations, possible community and peer ridicule, damages and cleaning within your home, and more.  These are the things that need to be considered before using deadly force and it can't be done in the heat of the moment.  People need to consider these things before even arming themselves or bringing firearms into their home otherwise it's just a liability.

So ultimately yea, I would never use a firearm to run someone out of my yard, shoot someone for stealing fruit, cars, tools, chickens or for even breaking a window to gain entry to my home in the middle of the night.  I would do my best to yell at the perpetrator in any of these instances and call the police when allowable because anything other than that is going to cost you.

Now, if and when someone comes through your window at 3 AM and you have yelled at them and they do not retreat, (which will probably never happen) well then, maybe you need to protect yourself and your family.  And if being "arrested" prevents harm to myself or my family in our home then I think it would be worth the trouble.

Anyone who thinks the police, government, or anyone else but themselves are going to protect them in that situation is taking a great risk in my opinion.  I would rather take the risk the other way and at least know I allowed no harm to be done to myself or family.

That method doesn't work for most newer cars, hence the drilled tank method.
