It isn't about the chickens, it isn't about being "right" or being "wrong" - it is about getting along with your neighbors. If YOU wanted to be a good neighbor, you would fence in your garden to keep the chickens out or fence in your back yard and let your dog deal with any chickens who come over the fence. Or you would talk to your neighbors and let them know you were having a problem so you could all work it out together.

I think talking with the neigbors is a good idea, but thinking about putting up hundreds of dollars worth of fencing is playing the part of a doormat.

No Bob my property is not fenced, nor do I intend to fence it because of some dumb chickens. If any fences go up it will be the people that find it necessary to have free range birds.

I bought property in Hawaiian Beaches because there is no home owners assoc. I have been there and don’t like the idea of someone telling me that I can’t park my boat in my back yard. Chickens don’t bother me if they stay home and not in my garden.

I have talked to my neighbors and said we have a problem here with “your” chickens. Would you like my help building some coops I have all of the tools and we could do it in an afternoon. The answer, naw it would cost too much for the wood and wire. I even offered to donate the wire, the answer was still naw. So I ask you who is the bad neighbor?

Thanks for posting that. My dog Toast was trained not to attack other creatures [even humans] just to stand his ground and let me know when someone was on the property. To my dismay he has regarded chickens as a non threat and leaves them alone. But the one that still has me scratching my head is that he allowed someone to steal the chicken trap from my yard.

Let me put it this way Hotzcatz, those chickens were coming on my yard and in my garden before I started to put out food “in my yard” to trap them. I no longer have to entice them, they are gone and if you want to take the high moral grown and call it entrapment, so be it. I now have my garden back and no more 05:30 hours of cock-a dodol-do. If the neighbors don’t like it raise turtles they lay eggs too.

Our dog loves chickens and sits with them, it's funny! Our neighbor's chickens have all been killed by his own dog, all but one.
This one chicken must be lonely because it comes over first thing in the morning and stays with our chickens until it's bed time. Our neighbor has a fully fenced yard and a coop, and the chicken still gets out! We don't mind as our own free range chickens poop on our lanai as it is [:0](earns our son some nice extra cash for cleaning it up a few times a week! lol)

Anyway, I think the bottom line is that no one should be expected to have to deal with animals or anything else on their property if it isn't wanted. It doesn't matter who was there first! That's the craziest thing I've heard by the way... That's like saying just because you purchased a home next to someone who's been there longer, you have no choice but to adopt their pets and let them have free range of your property! Maybe if the neighbors smoke, it's ok to throw their butts right on over too, huh?
It's helpful when neighbors get along and are willing to meet each other half way, otherwise I'm afraid Tom doesn't have much of a choice in the matter but to deal with it in his own way! Nothing at all wrong with that when you're left with no one but yourself to remedy a situation.
