Punaweb:Changes in latitudes,Changes in attitudes!
#21
I used to post more than I do now.(been with punaweb starting 2005/06) I miss the fun days of the early forum. If I want all the politics and BS I'll turn the news on. This site in the past was entertainment and local lighter information. Now it is like listening to a CB radio back in the 70's. Started out fun but then you got the people with the over powered radios that hogged the channel and made nothing but hate and discontent. Same now but the high powered radios have been replaced by the those people that seem to talk and post just to see there name and words on the internet. It has gotten vulgar very nasty in many ways. As far as the thing about an ignore button goes... why should the quite majority have to tailor Punaweb pleasure to fit around the few obnoxious posters? Now we'll see how much hate I get for posting MY feelings about this subject.

Thanks for this post.
I only started joining this discussion over the last year plus.
Some truly good exchanges. And, some downright mean spiritedness too.
Have to wonder about some of the bloggers: how anyone finds the time to post so much, and to have the the hate inside it takes to post so much venom.
As Pam said, this venom often keeps me limited to the Farm+Garden and Non-Classifieds.

Peace.

I think Rob can follow the advice from the new sheriff in town. This forum is like his private property, and we are all his guests.

Thanks for the discussion.

I'll admit to not posting as much, but even worse, I now skip over threads. Get really frustrated with the point/counterpoint, let-me-say-it-again, just-to-clarify, bait&trap styles that have been droning on so prominently.

Not so sure I agree with the concept of starting a thread and then attempting to shape the responses, but maybe that's just my perception.

I don't support the IGNORE function, because I would hope any poster can contribute something worth reading, but I'd miss it if on ignore.

Many longtime posters and friends have become less active. Seems like the quality of posting often comes up in face to face meeting.

Damon - not to point to you, but to address an issue you bring up: How much of your 1000 hit blog traffic is directed from PW simply because you pretend to contribute to a thread, but your answer is just a disguised link (gun to head) to your blog? If and when I want to read your blog, I will, I don't want to be tricked into it. One link in your signature is enough. You used to make links to pertinent info. I don't remember the last one that took me to a source. Sad
I note that you STILL are bothered by the posting limit - get over it.

I don't always agree with Rob, but give him consistent high marks for how he manages to hold it together.

Maybe we can get back to being open and respectful while casual and informative, with dashes of humor.

I've met some really nice folk through Punaweb and hope to make even more friends here as time goes on.

Dave - if you can get "tricked" into reading my blog... I sure hope your around me when April Fools comes around!

Dave... don't click here... trust me... you won't like it!

P.S. If you think your about to get tricked into going to my blog... you can run your mouse over any link and it will show you what site you are about to go to.... BEFORE you have been fooled. [:X]

Just don't click here... that's all I have to say.

Some might call it a "Disguised" link... I call it reading the FAQ's of a bulletin board and learning how to post effectively.[^]

"IMHO - The variety and texture of posts has a sharper "tone", an antagonistic "flavor", with frequent sarcasm - this might appeal to some but not all or most." Hmmmm, I agree.[Sad]

Thanks for this thread, it is thought provoking at the very least and some of the posts shared opinions we do not always get to hear. I think what Rob has done with this forum is fantastic. With a virtual community, there are always going to be a variety of opinions, loudmouths, lunatics and usually lots of really great folks, some who post, some who lurk and some who are extremely active. I like the idea that people can come together here. Our world is changing and Punaweb is obviously changing too. It is easy to ignore the posts that don't really appeal to us, but lurking and not engaging about positive things is not the answer either. I have only been here a year, and until we were sure we were moving to Hawaii, I did not engage much. With the move (6 days 9 hours to go) I naturally find Punaweb as a lifeline to the community we are going to be part of.

Thanks Rob for all the work you have done to create and maintain the site. Your gentle moderation and dedication to the Punaweb community is what has brought us all here. Personally, I have not found any posts offensive, though some posters appear to be on the rabid side. I either don't read those threads or at the very least don't add fuel to the fire by posting to them. Eventually those threads have a way of petering out. Even if they don't, the ignore feature is a good idea and I believe that by creating a place for people to express themselves is a positive thing. It is sort of like TV or Movies, you watch what you want and don't watch what you don't think you will like.

On a final note, I too find the gardening and non-classified sections preferable much of the time.

While some of the posts tend towards sarcasm and are sharp toned, compared to some of the vitriol out there, they are mild. I can't say that I have read anything hateful. There is a big difference between being snide and being truly hateful or nasty. I don't see the hate here myself.

Sadly, I lurk more often. I can't waste my wonderful time being aggravated by the slings and arrows that more frequently fly here on PW.

It's wonderful to see my old familiar friends in this thread though. Happy New Year to all! [Smile]

P.S. One thought is that whenever a forum entity grows to this scale, you cannot avoid ALL variety of input. Just part of the deal I think.
