The advisory is why we checked out Richardsons today... the beach area is north/Northwest facing, & does not seem to be picking up the swells, but beyond the rock protection it is really choppy. The surf was not unusually large for Richardsons, closer to 4 ft., but was very choppy & sloppy. The waves pounding the shoreline north of Hilo made that whole coast area white with waves & spray.... so your side was getting all of the fun!
For the picnic & gathering, the main areas are fairly dry (considering the weather we have had!) and the beach area was actually fairly mild.... not a lot of wave action right up in Richardsons' shore today...

It sure sounds like fun! I wish we could make it, but we will not be there until next Monday - so February it will have to be! Looking forward to meeting you all then though! :-) Have a great time,
Nelli

Sounds like the gathering is still on, though the ocean conditions may not allow for a "novice" like me to get out there and snorkel. It's still a day at the beach!
We're planning to go unless we hear there's a cancellation between now and 9:30ish.

Okay, morning report:
Sunday 0940
Sun is out with blue sky above the beach. Water is choppy and rough. Probably not a good water day with rough water however, an excellent BBQ day! Carey tells me we have secured the covered area for our BBQ and food so come on down! On days like this ever if we don't dive, it's a great chance to meet other divers and make plans to meet up at other times and places. Besides, it's fun!
Aloha, Pam

Well eight of us die-hards showed up and were rewarded by really great weather. Most of us got sun-burned!! Three snorkeled and saw a myriad of fish as well as a few turtles. Food was great! Overall it was a very relaxing day and we enjoyed the talk story and fine weather.

I had a great time hanging out. Brought about 25 lamb kabobs so there was tons to eat... we had some awesome rice dishes and other stuff. Only thing missing was chocolate!~ LOL
It was surprising to see sunburned cheeks as were were packing up around 3 or 4 pm. We joked about it and realize that none of us really expected a superb day but went anyway and were happily surprised. I think we had the only spot with blue over it and a bright sun..... and you guys ask why we use Richardson's!!!

I echo Pam's and Andrew's comments. It was a great afternoon and the snorkeling was surprisingly good.
For any "newcomers" that may be hesitant about joining up with the group, it was our first time attending a Sunday dive event. We were made to feel most welcome and, as Pam noted, the food was fabulous. We had fresh citrus juice, lamb kabobs, chicken, papaya, two rice dishes and donuts. If there'd been any chocolate it would have melted fast, though, in the warm afternoon sun!
