Wedding accessory advice needed
#21
Jerry: of course check out Makuu market, they may have one or both of your needs.

There was a lady at Singa Hall last fall that had some great covered memory books & photo albums. Chuysmom mom got me an album with volcano prints that is totally Hawaii.

There is a wickedly good & reasonable seamstress at Hilo Market that may be able to make the linen suit, Or call up the Discount Fabric Warehouse off of HWY 11 in Hilo, or the quilt shop in Downtown Hilo to see if they have any seamstress up for the job.

Also check out Jungle Love in the Malama Market & Rainbow Jo on Keawe in Hilo... and there is always the Goodwill & Sally Shop (Did you know that the Sally shop sometimes sells brand new Zig Zane closeouts?) Of course that is another place, Zig Zane IS high end, but fun. Don't remember if Joys on Bayfront in Hilo has mens clothes.... there are a couple of others that might have the top, then add white slacks...

The type of outfit you are talking about is a fairly easy construction, & if all else fails, give me a call... I have done them in a past life & can crank up the ol' sewing machines, but would rather direct you to those who make their living at this...

Jerry,

I hope the above comments provide the information you requested regarding white wedding garb for gents and wedding memory books.

Was there any other wedding accessory that you needed information about?

Well, I took the happy couple (and entourage) to Makuu Market today, and they loaded up on all sorts of goods, none of them wedding accessories. At one point, the men were actually considering buying some tools and shipping them back to Texas. The ladies were scooping up handsfull of colorful jewelry. I asked if they were to be used in the wedding and got, "Oh, no. We just like them and they're so cheap." We ate lunch from four different vendors, sharing with each other around one of the covered tables over in the little Hawaiian village area. Then we went back and bought fruits and veggies to take to their rental home.

For the afternoon, we drove the Red Road, stopping at Pohoiki, McKenzie, Kehena, and Kaimu, finishing with night views of the lava outbreaks on the pali above Kalapana. We could clearly see the flows and the sky was glowing over the vent and the flows. They were amazed!

It was a great day, but we did not buy ONE wedding accessory. When I mentioned this, they didn't seem worried. "We'll find something in that mall we drove past coming from the airport. They have Macy's. Can we go to the Volcano tomorrow?"

And so went their first day in Hawaii.

Cheers,
Jerry

Not totally sure what the groom is looking for, but here are some of the more 'traditional' warm weather ideas:

Here are a couple of online suppliers of guayaberas, the Caribbean dress shirt:

from the mainland

You may also see if any one carries the traditional Indian embroidered Kurta on the islands, something like these:

There are a quite a few online stores that offer white linen suits, the best price, but has a 3+ week order lead time:

You may want to see if Macy’s has any of their “Cubavera” line

i do recall seeing scrapbook items (hawaiian themed) at wally's, but that was before they re-set the store. haven't looked since. also, i think they had photo albums. the cover was out of what i think was a lauhala weave. if you do try tommy bahamas, here's the link and the locations to their stores in hawaii: tommybahama.com

1. waikoloa kings' shops 886-8865
2. the shops at mauna lani 881-8688
3. ala moana center (o'ahu) 955-8869
4. the shops at wailea (maui) 879-7828
5. whaler's village (maui) 661-8823

if the couple does find something there and the store doesn't have their size, ask them to call the other stores and have it shipped to you.

Jerry,
for the book you could stop in the Scrapbook shop near Ben Franklins for ideas.
We have many people who sew in Puna and I'm sure someone could whip up a wedding set.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions. I think the happy couple have most of it sorted out and should be fine. I am kind of busy and will try to give a fuller report after the wedding. Again, mahalo nui loa to this wonderful community of folks who offered suggestions and in some cases even offered to personally make things.

Cheers,
Jerry
