Jay's Tapas Shuts Down
#21
We spent a lot of time at Cronies when we were here for our closing a year ago. We had no Cable then and we were hoping to see some games and the election returns. Here is my opinion as a food writer:

Service: Over the top wonderful. The only reason we still go back there. Great wait staff.

TV: Lots of screens but on election night we had to beg and plead to have them switch just one to the election returns. After 100% of the people in the restaurant were huddled around that one TV, the turned on one more. It is ALL SPORTS there. Nothing wrong with that it is a sports bar! Ironically until a few months ago, this sports bar was also closed on Sundays. Not any more.

Food: It is like airline food. Pre cooked processed food that they re-heat. The only thing I have never sent back is the wings and they are really good wings. I love their wings in lava sauce. I don't usually send back food, but most things I have ordered there (aside from the wings)have bordered on awful. Wes loves their burgers. I have never had one. No matter what, do not order mahi mahi. I sent that back twice and then they took it off of the check. Salads: awful iceberg and a very pale tomato with OK dressings. There is nothing local about the food here. Go for the wings. They are really good.

Beer and Booze... great selection. Not much of a wine list, but it is a sports bar.

Carol. you should have called me! I have been there once and it was basically awful. The owner spent all her time talking to her friends. No fryer. Burgers were cold when they got to me and really nothing to shout about. VERY VERY slow service. I had a salad since there were no fries (fryer was out for over three weeks now!) and it was as limp as Mohamad Ali after being beaten in a fight, really bad. Tomato was as pale as the moon. WHY can' they go to the farmer's market and get good tomatoes? I went in for a quick lunch one day and it took 65 minutes, most of it waiting to be served & waiting for my bill. My tea glass was never filled in all of that time either.

Well, speaking of Cronies, my husband always orders their burgers. Never tries anything else and he loves them. I love their wings and nothing else I have ever tried there. At least they have great service at Cronies!

Carol the good news is that Jay is opening another place by the Palace. I hope he stays with tapas and expands his menu to a real tapas menu. It would be great!

Carol, you and I have a lunch date as soon as he opens!

Well, I've tried the new Hilo Burger Joint twice and I have to say I was not impressed. Both times the fryer was out of order, so no fries with the burger, just chips or salad, which they told me only AFTER my order was already in the kitchen. The menu was limited to maybe 12 different burgers, I've tried two different ones, the mushroom cheese burger and something else so unremarkable I can't remember what it was. Neither trip was satisfying, the burgers were tiny, dry, and cold, the tomatoes were anemic, the mushrooms were mostly stem, and without fries I left hungry both times. Plus my drink was really watery, how do you ruin a rum and coke?

I will stick with Cronies when I want a burger, the price is about the same, but the burger is bigger and better.

we opted for pahoa village cafe. the fries were excellent and so was my ono fish sandwich. the 3 margaritas weren't bad either. had to have those to calm me down from the near collision down near the airport. goodness! i'm still buzzing from those drinks some 6 hours later.[:0]

Devany,
Sounds like our visits to HBJ were about the same time, I almost always give a new place at least 2-3 tries, but for a burger there are better choices, I'm done with HBJ. Tell Wes the steaks at Cronies are also really good, the queens cut is over 2 inches thick and they cook it as rare as I want it. The burgers at Pahoa village Cafe are good too, but I really like their ham dinner.

We have a date for when Jay opens his new place, just let me know!
