Puna seems like the perfect place for a Mid Century Modern Revival. Whatever you folks do, PLEASE, PLEASE don't get that McMansion, faux Mediteranian thing going...God, It's uglifying California right now in the worst way.

It's called the breezehouse. It is perfect for Hawaii (and there is one, on Maui I am told). The signature is a butterfly roof that pulls the air up and then out. The back of the house has an enormous folding glass door. Basically, the house is an air mover. It is completely green, and very efficient. They do ship to Hawaii. It is much more expensive than a Big Island package house. And something about the style doesn't really work for me that well. But it is very practical for the climate. Oh, wait, were we talking about airlines?
I am taking Go from LIH to HILO, so I will let you know!

Yes, that is one of the Sunset Mag prefab houses. DWELL mag has them too.Funny, I was thinking about this as a perfect idea for a Puna Lot, but the shipping like you mentioned would just kill the whole deal.
I don't know how these houses are doing here on the mainland, if they're selling or not, because of people's infatuation of McMansions and Square footage.
With the cost of shipping, I wonder if it's just cheaper to build one.
The issue with that great folding glass door is...no screen door....
As mentioned in the other thread about mosquitos, I imagine that would be a problem in Puna :-0

Trust me on this one, I have checked all the Dwell-type pre-fabs. Way too expensive to ship over.

I trust you. The price I was quoted was $10,000 per container. A normal house would have two containers, so very expensive. Am thinking it could pencil out if you were looking to resale, as the architecture is a cut above and it is a great house. This is an architect designed house with very unique features, so it could work, but I think you are talking about $340-$360k to put this in on a given lot. That is just a wild estimate I pulled out of thin air, not to be relied upon.

Regarding the Steely homes, this one has just been completed and is now a vacation rental. I ventured in during construction and it's pretty amazing.

Does not surprise me. For go's discounted $39 fares, I wouldn't expect the pilots to be awake while flying the plane.

They are as good as any of the other inter-island airlines. They have helped to keep prices down. But they have had some bad press very recently about one of their pilots and co-pilots falling asleep while on a flight from Honolulu to Hilo.
