AJAM (channel 347 for Direct TV) has a program Techknow which will repeat Wed. 1PM & 11:30PM and Thurs. 10AM called Genetically Modified Mosquitoes. It is about the possibility of wiping out Dengue, Malaria, Zika viruses. Of course the no GMO people will object but I for one do not ingest mosquitoes so strongly support this. CDC states there are 50-100 million new cases of Dengue each year according to this program. The program mentions our island and the current outbreak.
I am avoiding areas like 12th, 17th Maku'u, thanks to Puna web info but it is a disservice that our health department does not indicate more specifically where the new cases are cropping up. I don't need names or addresses but general location would be appropriate. The map red and yellow dots are not updated along with new cases.

I'll be running more workshops on how to make mosquito traps using stuff you can get at a hardware store. These traps are based on research done by the CDC, various Australian research groups, and others. They work. These are not your yeast/sugar/internet meme traps. These are the same workshops I've run at Seaview several times, Puna Palisades, and Nanawale. There's no fee.
Here's the schedule:
Kalapana – Uncles ‘Awa Bar area (Weds Jan 27, 3pm).
Nanawale Community Center (Jan 30th, 2 pm).
Leilani – coming soon. Check back for details.
See: makemosquitotraps.org/workshops for info about what you need to bring (jars/buckets). I'll provide chemicals and other materials (free).
Thanks!

It could always be worse -

SINGAPORE: A total of 622 dengue cases were reported in the week ending Jan 23, according to latest figures published on the National Environment Agency (NEA) website.
This was 2 cases fewer than the previous week, NEA said, after revising down the original 628 figure. Another 89 cases were reported between Jan 24 and 3.30pm on Jan 25.
A total of 1,882 dengue cases have been reported in Singapore since Jan 3. Last Friday, a 47-year-old man living in Marsiling Rise died of dengue – the first dengue-related death this year.

It could be worse, I agree, but the population of Singapore is over five million. The Big Island is less that 200,000. As a percentage of the population, the outbreak on the Big Island has affected about four times the number compared to Singapore.

Big Island: 237 in 4 months = 15 a week
Singapore has a population 25x that of the Big Island so that is equivalent to 375 a week.
In the week ending 23 Jan they had 622 cases. So, I think they're worse off in Singapore, which isn't surprising
(more tropical, denser population).

It's all in the details, but I think you're right. I simply used the total number of cases, but yes, it seems dengue is spreading much more quickly in Singapore. It's actually a pretty small area, much smaller than the Big Island, with a huge number of people living there, so no surprise the population density might create an environment for dengue spreading quickly. Nearly 20,000 people live in every square mile on average.

The state's initial response to the Big Island's dengue outbreak was slow, he added, taking 40 days from the first case to the Department of Health activating its response, and that was in part because of Vector Control being given short shrift.
...yet Vector Control did have money for its "fight the bite" campaign, and someone managed to print up "molly the mosquito" books for the keiki. Funding priorities much?

I was told by a DOH Nurse, proudly, that Molly the Mosquito was a project done by Nursing Students in Hilo. THEY paid (in Tuition) to produce that book as a learning tool for school kids.
