Puna Watch Forum? Rob?

Which begs the question...

With all these benefits why is crime so bad here?

On a completely unrelated topic...

Has anyone seen women wearing miniature police bages on chains (necklace) around their necks?

I asked one what it was for and they told me (quite proudly) it signified they were married to a police officer.

Thoughts/opinions?

And

Can anyone else confirm / deny this?

Why would you need confirmation? The lady told you what it was for.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Maybe confirmation wasn't the best word choice Rob, I want to know if others have experienced this bizzare quasi-cult-like phenomena.

Yes, my husband (rest his soul) bought me one many years ago. 24 year veteran of the HCPD. I recall they can be purchased thru the SHOPO Shop (in Honolulu or online), at least at one time they were available for public purchase (if memory serves me right, which is sometimes questionable.[xx(])

If we traveled (which was rare), he'd make me take it off before we boarded the plane, especially after 9/11. We as "alphas" (the wives) to the officers in the old days, had to deal with what might be perceived as a somewhat "strange" request on occasion. Sorry, perhaps TMI, lol.

ETA: OMG, rainyjim, I'm as far away as a cult member as I am from a freaking clan! [:0] I think it's just a way of the spouse who is an officer, showing his wife and everyone else she is his wife. The personal inscription is private, near the heart when you wear it, in case he doesn't make it home that night/day after his tour of duty. Sorry you feel it's a cult. I am old, so don't know if that's the perception today. Sorry to hear that.

Thanks Opihikao that was quite enlightening, and I must insist! Please go on...what requests were you subject to on occasion?

My curiousity is piqued!

I doubt everyone would make that connection, but it does make me slightly uncomfortable - my issue not anyone elses.

Please, with all due respect to your request, and out of the most respect for my husband, my memories are cherished and private, although I may spew something out given my personal experiences.

Additionally, it's one of the first things you swear to when you join the cult: not to tell, rainyjim! [Big Grin] (just kidding, enjoy your posts. always a pleasure or a jolt! lol...aloha to you.)

Just a little more info..

Fringe benefits include:

•Holidays — 13 paid days a year, plus all election days except the primary election.

Of which you do not get the day off unless it falls on your day off, otherwise, it’s just overtime pay. If you’re new you can count on working ALL holidays.

BOOOHOOO You can cry your ass all the way to the bank!

•Vacation — 21 working days a year. The unused portion may be accumulated up to 90 days.

Try finding a Job that gives you 2 weeks a year!!!

Of which has to be arranged a year in advance and is subject to availability and recall at any time.

•Sick leave — 21 working days a year. The unused portion may also be accumulated toward retirement.

3 days in a row or more require a doctor’s certification for illness and return to work.

As it should... Point is you could take every other day off for your surfing lessons.. I worked for the government (federal) they never allowed you to accumulate them even for retirement!!!

•Military leave — full pay for up to 15 working days a year for active duty or annual training.

As it should be with EVERY job. Your obviously living in a dream world

•Funeral leave — three working days with pay for death of qualified family member.

Part of Family Leave.

•Accidental injury leave — upon choice of plan, full pay up to 120 working days for each work-related injury.

Called Workers’ Comp., required by law, along with a plan called AFLAC, (you know the duck, which you have to PAY FOR). Haha Again your living in a dream world *only government work offers this perk

•Health insurance — self or family medical, drug, vision and adult dental insurance partly subsidized by the County of Hawaii.

As is most jobs with enough people. Also now part of the ACA. ACA does not cover dental ... ***IF*** you can actually find a job that offers Health Benefits ...Dental isn't included in the package

•Life insurance — fully subsidized group life insurance for $26,000. Coverage varies with the age of the employee.

Basically a crappy insurance, and yes you have to contribute. Again...your living in a dream world

•Uniforms and equipment — furnished by the Hawaii Police Department.

First ones only, they do receive an allowance to buy additional replacements as is required by federal law for any job that requires a uniform. Most jobs do not have a clothing allowance

•Automobile subsidy — monthly allowance for private automobiles in police use, plus fuel and oil and tax-exempt motor vehicle registration if position requires the use of a vehicle.

They have to drive SOMETHING at work… Giv'em a Moped! I gotta drive something too!!! Again you are living in a dream world...

•Retirement — eligible for retirement with 25 years of police service in Hawaii.

Same as it is EVERYWHERE, and is NOT at full pay. Uh, what job gives you 100% of the FULL PAY?

It's obvious you've never had a "REAL" job in "TODAYS" market. Try going to WalMart or McDonald's or Target or Safeway... Heck, Home Depot use to offer some really great stock options no more. The best place to work? That still gives some perks not like that state or federal government is Costco! I am sure there might be some cool jobs left on the east side like being a doctor or pharmacy that might get even close to those benefits.

But, it would be nice if we could all get these types of Benefits for every worker. But nope everyone is pinching pennies where they can just to stay open.

Your post is not reality at all to the average worker. Your credibility just went to ZERO with me.
