I don't mind the plastic bag ban. I would have been fine with a bag made of decomposable material too. Now, can we get a ban on styrofoam? Substitute a thin cardboard for take out food and coffee cups too.

This is the worst law put into place by our county lawmakers! Here it is mid Jan. 2014 and guess what, plastic bags can still be found! All this law has done was given an excuse for stores to charge for their plastic ,or paper bags. Only Safeway and Foodland give you free paper bags. KTA now charges folks for the paper bags too! Now everybody(merchants) gets to set their own "bag agenda", and it isn't the same at any two stores either!

I save all my plastic bags and stuff them into my backpack so I can bring to use in Hilo. The cashier laugh about how they haven't seen those in long time. Then I boil water with the leftovers on my wood stove.
On Oahu if I triple bag I can can carry 10 lb if I wrap around my handlebar of my bicycle. 10 lb is heavy so double bag is iffy but impossible with paper bags.

In my opinion...this so called environmental protection Law is a joke. I mean why do we still see plastic material in stores, supermarkets etc. If the government is really concern of plastic materials getting into or affecting our environment then why only ban plastic bags? I have to be honest....i see more plastic bottles and other plastic materials littered throughout the state more then plastic bags. Why only certain islands/counties the law took effect. If there is any place that needs to ban plastic bags, Oahu is the place that needs it the most yet it will not take effect for them till 2015. Go Figure! This is what blew me away the most....The Law allowed vendors to charge a fee (what ever amount they desire) to a customer which uses the vendors plastic bags prior 2014. Every penny vendors took in for the use of their plastic bags is 100% profit. Why is the State accomodating vendors/corporations and taxing us the people. If there is going to be a ban...them ban it! In my opinion...the State law makers is not really serious of protecting our local environment. Another reason behind it...politics like usual!.

I'm happy to pay for bags if I need them for frozen stuff. I just wish the bus was still free.
