A ban on plastic bags is set to begin Jan. 17 at all Big Island grocery stores, restaurants and other retailers.

Consumers in the past year have been paying fees for plastic bags at checkout lines.

The Hawaii Tribune-Herald says the fee was part of a plastic-bag reduction ordinance adopted in 2011 that gave businesses one year to eliminate plastic-bag inventories.

When the ban is in place, customers will be able to use reusable bags or paper bags.

Plastic bags will still be allowed for bulk items such as nuts, fish, meat, grains, fresh produce, garments and prescription medications.

This is effectively a tax increase for anyone who was responsibly reusing their bags.

Irony: no bag ban on Oahu.

What about paper bags ?

Paper bags are okay; irony there is producing a paper bag has about 10x the environmental impact of making a plastic bag. Hemp-based paper would be a little better, but "drugs are bad" and "won't someone think of the children".

It's a bag. If you can afford to buy stuff, you're probably smart enough to figure out a way to carry that stuff out to your car. Life goes on.

I just roll the whole grocery cart out to my car and bag the groceries in the recycled bags there. Easy.
Assume the best and ask questions.

...but where did the milk crates come from?

They usually have warnings about "owned by the dairy", so it's like stealing a shopping cart.

small suspicious minds..... why accuse some one of being a thief without proof - make one feel superior?

As usual a good idea can often go awry when someone decides to create a law.
