Pahoa has a neon volcano sign -- its right on the side of the Cash'n'Carry building.
I know, I was just envisioning the one that Glen mentioned as some huge Vegas like think that arched about the street. I love the one on Cash & Carry but not sure I would like a bigger one that wasn't on the side of a building. I actually have a photo of the one at Cash & Carry on my desk at work to remind me of why I go to that office everyday. Just working my way to Hawaii!!

I KNOW that Pahoa cash and carry has a volcano sign (actually, two, right? --one on each side). That's my inspiration. Just leave it to us gay people. We will handle the conception. All you gotta do is carry it out. My idea is to carry that corny theme a little further--a sign that spans the street. No not like Las Vegas. Just a sign on a strong cable that says "Pahoa" with a nice little volcano beneath it.
Traffic circle right before you get into town. If you are going 45 mph or over, you will die when you come to it. A "Pahoa Development Corporation" is established. The PDC has the power to give tax and other breaks.
....more to come.

On second thought, maybe we gay people AREN'T that great at conception. I guess we are better at visualization. So, we got the "volcano" sign going across the street, and the traffic circle before you get into town, coming from either direction. We need an abstract brass sculpture in the middle of the road....and a 24 hour guard for it.....let me think about it some more.....

I've seen this done in New York City and Buffalo did their version, as did Phoenix, etc.
In Buffalo, they constructed large Buffalo statutes and had local artists paint them and they were distributed throughout the city strategically. They were auctioned off and the proceeds went to Roswell Park Cancer Institute...something similar for Pahoa (maybe on a smaller scale) might be fun for Downtown Pahoa...
Maybe pigs or something LOL!

There have been some proposals which would cover most everything addressed here regarding Pahoa.....but there is so little participation and involvement that it is doubtful anything can happen.
The formation of a legal Design District would go a long way to keep a lid on corporate logos when chains, like MacDonalds, inevitably show up. People yawn and look bored when the subject is raised but if we get golden arches at the entry of town then everyone will cry the blues.
There's a proposal for a series of tall posts with banners produced by local artists - the hope is to bing some local color and flare to compete with the Heclo high wire art. Almost no one wants to make an effort.
If those of you who talk about the things that can be done want to get involved - that might be effective. I keep telling people - it takes a village to make a village. Things don't happen by themselves.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Carrie, Hilo is doing Sea Turtles for their city wide art statues "Its a Honu World". They are currently looking for artists, groups of artists (and of course $$ and sponsors).

Chicago was one of the first in the nation with city art statues, with cows all over town...they were very popular (and what better for Chicago?) A few years later they did couches or something, not as popular (or as memorable...or I was older & the memory not as good?)
So based on that one test, Pigs in Pahoa would be very popular....

Okay, well on the sign, I am thinking of something like this, except on a smaller scale and with a volcano above the word "Pahoa" :

Flags in rainy Pahoa.....naw.
What Pahoa needs is just ONE destination business (you can't have a town square -- it would just attract druggies.) A business like Cafe Pesto. Luquin's? No, I'm sorry. I am a champion "diver". I consciously seek out the diviest places I can find. But Luquin's is just too grubby for me (Love the margaritas though). Glad Luquin's is there and they are GREAT citizens, and it is worth the gut bomb just to suppor them, but we need something just a little more upscale. Our market is volcano tourists. Need to pull them away from Hilo.
Worry not Punatics that Puna would lose its "edge" if Pahoa were gentrified ever so slightly. As long as there are wild pigs, p-lolo farms, and wild west subdivisions, that just ain't gonna happen.
As for getting involved, the spirit is willing, but the flesh is 2100 miles away. Don't get discouraged though. I believe some energy is coming to Pahoa......

I like Luquins' fajitas...yum. Don't do alcohol so don't care about the 'ritas...I like the sound of plates in the kitchen and the family atmosphere and people talking...
