So...about how much would a metal roof cost - on say a ~1500 sqft house, lol?
If you live in an area where catchment tanks are common, guess what? The home you are buying ALREADY has a metal roof. You would not find yourself having to replace some other kind of roof with a metal one because of your wanting to have a catchment tank .
If you are building a new house in Puna, a metal roof would be your only choice so you could use a catchment system.
BTW, your "So ..." and "lol" comments make you sound like an arrogant jerk. If you don't like the idea of catchment, move into town where you will be hooked up to county water.

But, if your days at the office typically go like this:
Cagary: Hello, Cagary Roofing Sales.
Customer: Hi, I'm interested in a water catchment system. So...how much would a metal roof cost?
Cagary: Why you arrogant jerk! Get outta town!
*sigh* Truth begets hatred...

I live in HB, and have a traditional asphalt shingle roof.
To get converted over to catchment from private water source would cost about 10-13K. Depending on how much you wanted to do yourself.
I'm just gonna go with the 13K mark, since after the gutters, downspouts, outbuilding for tank and bladder and filters....
Anyway... 13K / 45 (average cost of water bill per month) / 12 yearly. Would take about 24 years to pay off... That's not including electricity to run the pump, maintenance of filters, covers, liners, cleaning tank and adding in monthly chemicals, trucks coming to refill tank as you know HB isn't the rainiest spot on the island.
At 24 years you'd most likely be looking at a new metal tank, living close to the ocean. Unless you painted the metal every year.
Anyway.... harvesting water isn't all that cheap if you want to do it right...

^ Thank you for the very kind & informative reply! [8D]
So, basically you estimate around $13K TOTAL for everything (tank, system, metal roof, installation labor, etc)?

i have seen catchment tanks that have their own shed roof over them that catches the water where the house has non metal roofing. seems cheaper than re-roofing the whole house. i have one of peters cement tanks and it is really nice not wondering what might have gone swimming in there. on a side note, my catchment had to be part of my house plans, and somehow it got by me and they had a metal tank on the drawings. i had to get a demolition permit for the tank that did not exist then a new permit for peters tank with all the architect drawings etc. held us up a bit but so worth it. i have a small fiberglass tank right next to it (2800 gallons) that gets the overflow from the cement tank and they said i didn't need a permit for that. the 10K gallons is just for insurance so peter built my tank at 8000 gallons and it fits the bill...

If I understood correctly, the figure did not include a metal roof. When I spoke to the guys at Island Catchment about it, the metal roof cost nearly as much as the rest of the catchment system combined. Basically the catchment tank is going to spend its entire life straining to keep back 80,000+ pounds of water without bursting (when this happens the rushing water can knock a house on post and pier off its foundation... happened to a guy in South Point) and any roofing system can't put any weight or stress on the tank itself without a lot of fortification (ie a lot of extra expense). So most of us use a galvanized electrical conduit frame and shade cloth for the roof.
