Senators want state to explore interisland ferry
#31
How does Alaska do it? The states main Hwy is via water called the "Marine HWY" and they have been using it for years and years already. Seems to work fine for them going from island and ports all along the state and even into Canada their routes are longer and father then would be interisland. Rough waters in some channels and some docking ports it takes days to reach destination. Federally funded I think or maybe state as the marine HWY is considered a Roadway even though by water.

The Alaska Marine Hwy. has ferry routes that cross the Gulf of Alaska and head to ports part of the way out the Aleutian Chain. The seas in these areas are not trivial so I would think the channel between Maui and Hawaii would not be insurmountable. That said, the Marine Hwy. does not pay its own way and has been heavily subsidized by the State for years.

The military more than happy to take over the government backed loans on the existing ferry designs. I never did hear any complaints about the ride .....

interesting on how things played out - govt did get a deal on the boats in the end ...."off balance sheet funding" the skeptical part self keeps thinking - grin

What about the seas from for instance Juno to Bellingham, WA that is all open sea from Sitka to Bellingham which the seas can get pretty ruff I would not say calm by any means we have been on the ferry system.

Even if Ferry could not make it between from Maui and Big isle why not the rest of the island chain interisland?

Yes the Marine HWY is Federally funded I would think Hawaii would qualify for the same funding?

Lots of interesting information here:

and this:

The discussion of "Secret Interstate H201" is also interesting.

The Alaska State Ferries runs one out to Dutch Harbor in the Aleutians except in the winter.
The boat that services that route is the Tustamina.
It is the only Alaska State ferry that is certified for offshore service.
It carries vehicles too.
It has been instrumental many times in rescues made in the vicinity of its route.
I have rode on it many times while living and working out in Dutch.
Storms of a greater magnitude than Iselle are very common along Alaska's south and west coasts, the North Pacific, and the Bering.
With the right type of vessels an inter-island ferry service could be a great asset to the state of Hawaii.

Pog, if your post is in response to my post, it has gone completely over my head.
Your point?

can't make sense of Pog's Iselle reference either. best guess: the fact that there is the possibility of hurricanes and tropical storms passing through the vicinity makes an inter-island ferry system too dangerous to operate?

suppose the same should be true of air travel too. operating the bus system could be dangerous in extreme weather too. puzzling.
