This startup plans to dominate the pizza delivery market with robot-made pizzas:

At least you don't have to worry about the robot spitting in your food.

This discussion prompted me to Google 'automat' -- found some way-cool photos of old-time automats like these: http://bit.ly/292TLXp

Wikipedia has a great article, too, if you're interested in automated food service. Apparently automats are still around. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Automat

I remember as a kid going to NYC on a field trip and we ate at an automat. It was pretty cool watching the staff behind the wall refilling all the slots.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horn_%26_Hardart

Going to Horn & Hardart automat was a big deal for kids visiting New York in the 40's & 50's . Holland had them too into the 1970s that I know of, and lunch cost 10 cents. ( in Gilders)

German automated restaurant, no waiters or waitresses, only hostess.

Japanese automated sushi restaurant, no waiters or waitresses

Considering the situation in Hawaii, these may never make it here. But there is one thing happening, either ordering by an app or a table touchscreen. It wouldn't take much to implement this in a small restaurant, just a wifi network, menu tablet at the table, monitor for cook in the kitchen. Paper menus cost a lot, plus it's hard to change the menu. There can be a bus boy button for extra water, bus boy brings out the meal.
