Big Island Charter schools possible closure
#31
Didn't your mommas tell you guys not to believe everything you read?[Smile]

I was just wondering if anyone knows who is in charge of those beautiful commercial buildings that make up the Pahoa Community Center and if they are occupied during the day?
What a boon to the local businesses it would be with all the extra traffic passing by.[Big Grin]

I bet those who say leave the poor school alone, will be the FIRST to jump all over the county, building, fire, & planning should anything happen and a child was injured or killed because of
code violations. They will be the first to cry out that government shouldn't have let them occupy a building that failed to meet fire and building safety codes. That knowing violations existed and failed to shut the school is negligence and the poor innocent children are the victims. Now somebody tell me that wouldn’t happen!

SHUT THEM DOWN![Sad!]

And while I'm at it...
Are these parents so selfesh that they are willing to ignore safety, building, fire, and heath code issues? Are they saying that the education they feel is best for their brats is more important than their kids SAFETY! If they think they have a right to do as they please, ignore the rules, thumb their noses at codes, and ignore what neighbors feel; they had better not open their flap should anyone do anything in violation of any codes next to their property or in their community.[V]

Oh my gosh has the Fire Marshall checked out all the other Charter schools in the County?
Do the others have there Permits? Maybe the Building inspector should investigate them too. Just to be sure as we wouldn't want there heads to roll if something happened, we wouldn't want the county to be negligent with all the other schools either.

My God a shop light could fall on some little childs head the nerve of some people.

Hey here's a funny story somebody got some old doors at the recycle center the other day.Guess where they came from Mountain View DOE Public high school seems just the other day they got around to replacing them with the fire safety doors.Geeze how long have those thousands of students that passed through those doors been in such danger? Maybe the fire Marshall can answer that.
Does anybody know if MWS has the fire safety doors? We must get an inspection done right away the children could be in DANGER!!!!

OMG DOES THIS MEAN WE HAVE TO SHUT DOWN EVERY SCHOOL IN THE STATE UNTIL THE PUBLIC IS ASSURED THAT THEY ALL MEET THE CODES!!!THE CODES FOR SAFETY!!!

Puna needs more schooling options 4 sure... I dont see anyone saying otherwise....

Damons new here... He does not know about the previous discussions had here on Punaweb that were all deleted.

Remember back when you were announcing your new school opening, looking for people to help finish getting the homes ready for students?

Didnt many people come forward asking questions about enrollment? While others were shocked and very upset the school was renting homes in HPP to use as classrooms and didnt inform anyone at the HPP office.. or for that matter the people who own property around the area the houses were located?

Wasnt there some sort of legal action to make the school stop saying that they were using the Waldorf curriculum and had Waldorf certified Teachers?? Not trying to start trouble here, just asking questions.

I wish you folks the best of luck, I really Do!

In my opinion, You blamed Waldorf then. Just as you are now...
Trying to make us believe that Malama Waldorf was behind all your troubles... and thats just not right IMHO....

really Bob, just what is your stake in all of this? You seem to really being venting big time over this issue. anela1111 hit the hammer on the nail. The only complaints are coming from the MWS. Since day one when Waters of Life was coming back, they MWS took up the offense because they felt threatened. What Waters of Life has done for me is allowed my son to go to a school closer to home. Be in the Charter school system, and be able to attend it for free. I could never afford to send my kid[s] to MWS. Couldn't afford tuition, with raising health care cost, food prices, gas prices etc, etc, all on the rise...not to mention a mortgage too. So naturally I was elated when I found out about the return of 'Waters of Life' .
On the other hand it only fitting that MWS would be bitter about the "new kid on the block". But they need to get over it!

Politics, politics, politics, that's all it is! I've been to two of the HPP campuses, and I can tell you that neither are a fire hazard, or health hazard. Nor do I see these campuses being a problem to the neighborhoods. Kids aren't running all over street after school, they hang on property until parents arrive to take them home.

It's a shame that MWS feels threatened because there is another charter school in the same neighborhood, and that charter school is free! Sure MWS lost some staff and enrollment, but that's to be expected right? Perhaps MWS needs to offer up their education for "free"too?[Smile]

My issue was, and still is the idea that this is an alternative for public school students when no effort was made to recruit students in the public school. The only kids recruited were ones who were already going to MWS, or wanted to, but couldn't afford.

When I started selling the idea to local parents with kids in Puna schools, the school was suddenly *full*. It's not here to serve the community at large. It's here to serve a small faction of the community with DOE dollars. That's the enrollment question to ask. How many students left Puna public schools to become enriched by this wonderful new school?

Since the owners are going to court the "complaint" is part of the file, its from MWS (K.C.) with parts from there lawyers "Rosenberg,Katz"

There is also a member on the CSRP Nina Buchnan who will tell you if you ask her that "My colleagues from the MWS have checked out your school and feel your doing a disservice to the children of Puna and my recommendation would be to revoke the WOL charter"

These are things you can check out if you care to. Sorry.
WOL has always had troubles EVERYBODY knows that, but MWS is making lots of additional trouble despite what they may tell you it would be nice if they stopped.
Like I said MWS is a asset to our community I would not want to ever see them have problems it just trickles down to the kids.

There was NEVER any legal action about using the word WALDORF just a letter from Rosenberg and KATZ. But I did see that MWS had to stop using the word because they lost there accreditation even had to remove it from there sign. But I know they are working hard to get it back.I would suspect that is part of the reason why they were upset many of the Waldorf certified teachers left, its not illegal to say a teacher is Waldorf certified if they are.

The neighbors at all the schools were generally very supportive and not one complaint to the county came from them so I'm not sure where you got that from. The HPP hui is VERY supportive of schools in the park One of the board members even does some of the maintenance on the properties, try asking for yourself.

The school is not going to go away its just needed too badly and to many people care deeply about it,we may have lots of grief and turmoil but we will be around, MWS needs get get used to that, the few children that actually came from there will not be returning.
The only people expressing shock were obviously from MWS where are they now.
Most of us in our community that are familiar with our charter schools realize that a residential house that may not be a commercial structure is still way better than some of the alternatives. As soon as people start screaming health and safety its all over.
Like I said it was MWS, I really don't know why you want to dredge it all up again MWS got there way, no other elementary schools in the park the schools in the park are pau.

Sorry for your experience Greta the CS admin illegally capped our enrollment but that has been rectified. There are openings except for 1st grade. But like I said $ is too tight to advertise and you can see what happens when we try to do it for free,we did have a fair at the HPP hui to let the community know we are here,But it does seem like you found out about it.
I'd say its a good mix of students from DOE schools and kids who were homeschooled and MWS.I think most are from the DOE you can call the office they may have that stat. Hope it works out for you please know that I've been on every waiting list for every charter school in the area for 4 years now still have not been called.

You misunderstand my interest. I am talking about last spring when the charter school was actively soliciting current MWS students, but was completely disengaged with any other local schools. Any Puna public school families that I gave contact information to were told that enrollement was full, while students from MWS were still being actively recruited.

Personally? No.

In concept? Big Time.

The school is in violation of multiple regulations and their attitude lends me to belive they don't care and will violate other reegulatiosn if they please. They are literally telling the people that they are above the very regulations that were made to protect the people.

The 2 issue surrounding the schools are not complex.
1. They opened a school in violation of zoning. Did they ask permission to open the school? Did they apply for the proper permits in advance? Did they solicit community input? The answer is NO. They just ignored the rules and did what they wanted and now are crying because they got caught.

But instead of addressing this issue, they throw out excuses and diversions. They want you to ignore the repercussions of zoning violations and focus your attention elsewhere. Of course, their actions send a clear message: Go ahead, ignore zoning requirements and do what you want, the rules are really for the other guys, not us.

2. There are serious health and safety violations at the school. Did they address safety and health issues before opening? Did they consider these issues relate to the health and welfare of children? Are they correcting the existing violations or compounding them? The answer is NO. They just ignored the safety of the children and did what they wanted and now are crying because they got caught.

But instead of addressing this issue, they throw out excuses and diversions. They want you to ignore the dangers of having children in unsafe conditions and try focusing your attention elsewhere. Let's come down hard on things that endanger our children, unless we happen to be the ones endangering the children for in that case, let's just ignore it.

I have not heard one answer from the school, parents or supporters that justifies this outright disrespect for the people and the regulations that are here for OUR protection. And, let’s not forget we are not talking about a bunch of adults who are endangered, we're talking about children who don't have a say. As a society, we have a duty, an obligation to those who can't help themselves. Those children don't need our pity or understanding, they need our protection because their parents obviously don't give a damn about them.

If we accept these violations, don’t complain when someone else decides it’s their turn to open something you don’t want in the community. For that matter, let’s just throw out the entire zoning code and let whatever happens happen. Let’s throw out all health, safety and fire regulations, and just take our chances.

I'm often told that Puna is not the place to live. Read any board discussing Hawaii and you hear the same thing. Puna is the other side of the tracks, stay away, washed out hippies, bunch of ignorant poor people, an open trash dump, have no respect for themselves, live in shacks, anything goes, thinks WalMart is a classy store. ice heads, a trailer park without the trailers, filty, blue roof city, and all the other things we hear whenever "Puna" is mentioned. Well, you know what, this reinforces that attitude. If you don't care about the rules designed to protect your community and the children, you are what people say you are.

The Entire State is in Violation and some of those problems could be fixed if the State was in compliance.[Wink]

Another quick question... How many public schools are actually keeping up with the Healthy Schools initiative?

Do we pull the plug on all those schools because they simply don't have the money to implement the programs?
