the quality of the candidate
When I drove through Puna over the last month, I was astounded at the size and number of glossy, full color posters with Ashley’s photograph that I saw. The signs blanketed the district, lining our roads, some the size of small billboards. They must have cost a fortune. I have never, ever seen advertising for a council race on this scale. A few years ago Tiffany had hand made, hand painted signs, just large enough to hold her name, and not big enough to squeeze Tiffany on it, just Hunt. This election, somebody who’s not a young woman with two children put a lot of money into the District 4 race.
she is someone to watch
With her photo now shrouding the Puna landscape, how can you not?

Eileen sealed her fate with her rant on the Hub and turning them in to the Department of Health three times trying to shut them down. The rooster legislation and voting for the tax increase didn't help either.
Thinking part of it had to do with the number of campaign signs? Really? From what I have read about the District 4 election, Eileen was slinging mud, and Ashley refused to respond to the mud slinging. If it had to do with Filipino roots, then why didn't Madie Green win the previous election?

Somehow, I missed the hu-hu over the Hub and the Health Department. When I googled it, nothing came up. No news coverage? In my area of HPP, there were actually more signs for Ohara than Ashley K. Ashley's were better quality, but there were definitely more for Eileen. I don't think it was the signs.

The hu-hu over the Hub was mentioned in a well circulated video of Ikaika Marzo giving his comments about a lengthy post from Eileen O'Hara of FB. If you are on FB the video is easily found on the Hawaii Tracker and Big Island Thieves pages if you search for Ikaika.

In some areas that was true.
But try driving through down Kahakai Blvd (soon) through Hawaiian Beaches / Shores. Also, size and color matter, that's why advertisers spend the big bucks and use it. Every one of Ashley's giant full color signs probably has the impact of 3 or 4 or more smaller two color Ohara signs as you drive past them at 45 mph. (I had a girlfriend in college who majored in advertising, her mother owned an ad agency in Chicago. I heard more about advertising in those years than I ever really needed to know.)

Nice innuendo to start the day… sounds nefarious! How bout questioning whether her family on the mothers side has a printing/graphics business? Or examine her campaign spending reports for anomalies? Or consider her professsional background and how that might affect the style and strategies of her campaign? Or where the youthful supporters who enjoy jumping in and out of trucks to pound signs and frame banners get their enthusiasm?
Or… not.

Puna district 4 is predominately agricultural, attempts to designate it as residential through rooster control legislation... not a good idea.
Beyond that, most people moved here because they like the rural atmosphere. Threatening that, not smart. Also, because of the volcanic action, we shouldn't be zoning or trending towards a residential atmosphere, that's rather irresponsible considering the lava inundation aspect.
Keeping Puna predominately agricultural is simply the right thing to do and pushing anything that's blatantly anti agricultural is reflective of someone who simply doesn't get it and doesn't really belong here, better they move to Hilo or Kona if that's what they're after.

That's not to say that community improvement projects and infrastructure improvements should be shunned. It means things that aren't conducive to promoting an agricultural lifestyle, simply don't belong here.

Seems like that would be a fruitless search. If your family printed the signs, and invoiced for the signs, or didn't have to invoice for the signs, it would be almost impossible to follow the money and it's impact.
But, that's politics.
I'm not necessarily against Ashley. She might have family support, youth support, a background in advertising strategy, but I just wish I had heard more about the skills she has which would benefit District 4 voters. I have little or no idea what they might be from her blue sky campaign. Let's hope she learns and develops those skill quickly, on the job.
