Have you bought any gas lately?

Actually, I saw a post on the "book" that showed Paul's Repair in Puna at the same price as Kurtistown.

While I am sure it is still a bit cheaper in Hilo, I don't see much wisdom in driving to Hilo from Puna and back again to save 30 cents a gallon, but I could be wrong.

Not wrong, except that Hilo is a common destination for Punatics so if you're heading that way then might as well hold off on purchasing gas until then if you can.

I suspect that all of the stations will be bumping up above $5 real soon, like this coming week.

It makes sense when you work in town anyway, or you're retired but avoiding the criminally high prices at Puna grocery stores.

On the mainland you see this kind of pricing dynamic when you're in the ghetto, or living more than 45 minutes outside of town.  Here you see it a 15 minute drive from Hilo.

Keaau, still $0.20 cheaper: https://www.gasbuddy.com/gasprices/hawaii/keaau
Hilo, still $0.30-0.40 cheaper: https://www.gasbuddy.com/gasprices/hawaii/hilo
Never mind the price of items in the 7-11 has gone up by 50% or more.

Shame on you, Kurtistown 76 and Par Pacific. Exploiting your community.

FWIW, according to AAA the increase in price for Hawaii lately (Feb. 18-March 16) has been less than seen in most states. We are at +.56 cents per gallon, with the only state less than that being Delaware. This info was presented in a table at a NYT story. The AAA link they give is https://gasprices.aaa.com/state-gas-price-averages/

Just received another email about fuel surcharge increases, and now frequency as well.

Question.  I heard from a guy in line at Malama Market that we don’t need no oil from The Hormuz.
Another question.  If that’s true, why is there a fuel surcharge in Hawaii?
Answer.  Because commodities are global, which some people don’t seem to understand.

Hope that guy in the checkout line likes paying more for everything.

Fuel Surcharge Disclaimer: Due to ongoing global market conditions, jet fuel costs have increased significantly.  As a result, our fuel surcharge will transition from a monthly to a weekly adjustment schedule.  Aloha Air Cargo reserves the right to implement these adjustments with immediate effect to reflect fluctuations in fuel prices.  Customers can expect a weekly email update outlining any increases or decreases in the fuel surcharge.

Aloha Valued Customer,

As you are aware, Aloha Air Cargo will now adjust its fuel surcharge on a weekly basis.

In keeping with our process of providing customers with advance notification, please be advised of the following fuel rates:

Hawaii Interisland: Effective April 5, 2026, fuel rates will increase to $0.24 per pound (increase).

Something's got to give with airline ticket prices too. Either fares will be going up significantly or domestic airlines could consider fuel surcharges of their own, as seen on international routes.

Unfortunately, there is going to be a lot more things to give DF and real soon:

Hawaiian Electric bills to soar up to 30% due to higher oil prices

https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/202...3a9ab621d3

A little tease:

Hawaii Island customers would see the biggest increase based on a typical residential bill in March of $224.24, at a projected $44.85 to $67.27.

Who could have thought all this "winning" could be so expensive?

ETA: Up next? Matson?
